From an interview with Jeremy Allison:
One of the things is, there are many many people who have - let's say - they've got a small office with 50 computers or whatever. They don't have an LDAP server, they don't want an LDAP server, they don't know what an LDAP server is, they just want something that will standardise all their accounts in a single file. So for that, a built-in Samba 4 LDAP server is great, is exactly what they want. They want something that they can roll out with zero administration, it just works from their Windows admin tools.
This sounds great, so we can finally use SME Server for authentication of Mac and Linux clients with no difficulty. Come on Samba 4!

Further to this, if you have a look at http://www.samba.org you will find this tidbit:

Samba 4.0.0TP1 Available for Download
Samba 4 is the ambitious next version of the Samba suite that is being developed in parallel to the stable 3.0 series. The main emphasis in this branch is support for the Active Directory logon protocols used by Windows 2000 and above.
Samba 4 is currently not yet in a state where it is usable in production environments. Note the WARNINGS, and the STATUS file, which aims to document what should and should not work.
With 3 years of development under our belt since Tridge first proposed a new Virtual File System (VFS) layer for Samba3 (a project which eventually lead to our Active Directory efforts), it was felt that we should create something we could 'show off' to our users. This is a Technology Preview (TP), aimed at allowing users, managers and developers to see how we have progressed, and to invite feedback and support.
The uncompressed tarball and patch files have been signed using GnuPG (ID 1EEF5276). The source code can be downloaded now. See the release notes for more information.
