Title: backups of passwd, group, gshadow, and shadow
Post by: osiris9510 on February 03, 2006, 09:07:34 PM
Does E-Smith have any way of restoring corrupted files of:

/etc/passwd
/etc/group
/etc/gshadow
/etc/shadow

???

I've narrowed the problem down to those files.

What are the lock files associated with these 4 files? each of them has the same number in it, 3447. Is that a process ID? If it is, would killing that process help? There is no process 3447, but maybe its a rouge process? What if I deleted these 4 lock files?

They are included in a standard backup/restore. They can't be restored individually - and it doesn't make sense to do so.

Apparently one of those is corrupted. I can't make a new user with useradd, I always get "Segmentation fault".  I can change existing users but I can't add any new ones. Any ideas?
