Title: Newbie here - Cannot get the server on the network

Has local IP and subnet, domain network card driver etc. Cannot ping it, or access it via browser. Any help appreciated.

It is on a Microsoft Network and domain.

you are not giving us enought information - are you in "server" mode? How many NICs do you have? - have you selected the correct one in the console config? - what is the Ip address of the server versus the IP address's on the network?

It has one Intel Pro 100 VM adapter builtin, it has the correct driver and it is supported, I verified through Intel driver downloas, it is setup in Server Mode, and has one of our free ip addresses on our lan, same subnet.

and what mode is the server  - private server or just server?

Are you accessing it using

http://<ip address>/server-manager ?

what does ifconfig show you from the command line?

Yes, I have tried http://<ip address>/server-manager, Nothing.

I followed the instructions at: http://www.netbootdisk.com/esmith.htm down to step 26, I can't do the rest because of this problem.

The domain is set to our local domain name and I have tried a different one, same result.

In server only & gateway mode you first need to goto the console and enter
the IP for external access, the IP of the system you are using
to access the server from.
Your an outsider.

In gateway mode you get access on the lan side of sme by default.
Your an insider.

It is setup in Server Only mode, no gateway.  Would it still apply? I after setup it will need to be accessed by multiple IP's.

Yes, it applies to both modes and you would enter each IP for access.

You might want to consider gateway mode, then all on lan side of sme would
have access  limited by password.

I have setup one in the past in server only mode .. so it is possible but not as straight foward as setting it up as a gateway/server.

Right before I switch versions I normally play around with the new version before upgrading to a new version. What I normally have to do is set the SME server up statically on my network. I normally run a dhcp range of 5-10 ip addresses so for instance if my dhcp range is  192.168.1.25 -192.168.1.40 . Then I set the ip address of the server only sme at 192.168.1.41. Now the main sme server is also my gateway and domain controller. Normally after few mins after the test server boots it will show up in my network neighborhood if I set up an account the same as the windows machine that i am logged into on a windows machine.

Now dont forget to change the Domain name to match your other computers.   If you can ping it you should be able to connect to it.

In server only mode, if you cannot ping the ip address, I would be connecting a keyboard and monitor to the server and logging into the console to check to make sure the ip address, subnet mask, and gateway are all correct using ifconfig.  If they are, try pinging a local computer via ip address.  This will establish that the computer can talk with the network.

I will try that shortly. I reinstalled and double checked everything, and tried it in server/gateway mode and still can't ping it or see it in anyway. I will post what happens with your suggestion. Thanks

Just finished instaling SME Server in Server-Only
Connect using http://<ip address>/server-manager, works for me.

I did exactly the same to start with, and nothing. I verified all my ip info with our communications group, maybe it is something wacky with our vlans........ I will have to check, I am on the same one with it so????

If you haven't gotten it working yet a print out of ifconfig would help here.

Now that you mention vlan, might very well be the problem, sme will

want to be on a untagged port with PVID set.

Remember an untagged port gets tagged by the switch using the PVID and
a tagged port tells the switch that the device will be tagging the packets
on that port, SME by default doesn't have provisions for tagging so switch
needs port set untagged.

Yes... if your connecting via lan side, wan side of sme is restricted by default
and requires entry of external IP for access.

you may want to use...

https://<ip_address>/server-manager

It was the VLAN taggin. Had to dissable it on the port the server was on. :hammer:
