I am running SME 6 as a Samba server for windows xp and windows 2000 computers. I have heard some of my users complain that occasionally on login, they will be prompted with a message saying that the password will expire in X days. Do they want to change their password now. Everyone has always continued on without showing me therefore I have not seen it. It seems though that the admin password has expired or been changed as I am getting an access denied when trying to access the server via ssh and the web interface. If i use the username "root" for ssh, I can connect with no issue. How can I fix this so that I can login as admin again and prevent this from happening on other user accounts?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
TMP
I should probably add that the SME is a PDC and that I cannot login to the network from a workstation as admin either.

No ideas here? This is becoming a more pressing issue as I have some administrative tasks to take care of.

I have searched, and I did find that. However I do not find
If the PCs were previously connected to a 2000 server domain, it maybe the password/security policy from that server. If so search M$ site for instructions on removing the policies fom these PCs.
Just a thought.
To be a proper resolution.
It is not just a Windows problem because I cannot login to the computer as 'admin' via ssh or through the web interface (http://myserver/server-manager). I can however login as 'root' via ssh.

I really need to figure out how to fix this. I cannot login to the server-manager or ssh with the username 'admin'. I can login to ssh using 'root'. I really don't want to have to reinstall since this is a PDC and I would have to rejoin 50+ workstations in 3 very geographically diverse offices. I need to be able to add/modify/delete users/groups/ibays.
Thanks for any insight.

TMP,
By default the root and admin passwd's are the same. If you can logon via ssh with username root , then from the command line change the admin passwd to be the same as the root passwd that you used.
#passwd admin
Logout and you should now be able to access server manager from your workstation https://yourdom.com/server-manager

That fixed it. Thanks Warren. I wonder though.... How did the password get changed in the first place? I am the only one who knows it or how to even log onto the server for that matter. I don't have clue how it got changed.
Anyway thanks for your help,

Have you done a security check?

You are the second person to report this issue in the last few days. If you haven't done so already, could you please email security@contribs.org about this.
Thanks,
Paul
