sorry, I am a total noob here. but I set up the system, installed sme 7pr, and when it starts up, I just get the terminal. I login as root (the only account that exists as of yet) type in my password, but I never once see a gui...
I have never seen what I see in all the screenshots of sme server, so I assume I did something terribly wrong in the setup.
any help?

SME does not have a gui at the command line. you must log into the gui from a web browser on a machine conected to the local network.
https://your_server's_name/server-manager
or
https://your_server's_IP_address/server-manager
use admin as the user and the password that you set up during the install.

If you are that new to SME I suggest you start with the Users Manual. it is located here:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//bobk/SME_Manual/chpt-00.1-toc.html
It is currently for version6 but most everything still applies especially the basics of the system.

thank you both. I had no clue that this was managed on LAN, not on the main linux box. that makes things MUCH easier.
thanks again!

you can login as admin at the root console which will give you several options to make changes to the server also.

You can manage the server remotely from anywhere using ssh and putty and also server manager if you configure remote access appropriately or use VPN.
