Title: Another stupid question

The following pops up in notepad on the xp pro machines

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

What the heck is that for? :hammer:

Shouldn't you be asking that in a forum which has something to do with XP?

You problem does not seem to have anything to do with SME Server 7 ;)

Perhaps Charlie, but I didn't have this error until  SME was installed.  I think that makes it pertinent to this board.

That's a snippet of a file called desktop.ini, found in many, many folders on your XP systems. They are used to control attributes of the folder (I think......) eg colour, backround etc.

I found some discussion on similar things at http://tinyurl.com/m8d6v

Seems to be an XP problem which coincidentally happened about the time you installed SME.

"Coincidence" DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL "Cause".

BTW< when you want help, it would be useful to FULLY describe the system you're having problems with, then we can understand the scope and nature of the problem.

The desktop.ini is created when you create domain users in XP.

M$ assume that XP will only log onto a windows domain.

You can delete it by removing the desktop.ini from the startup folder in programs menu.

Hi

The settings for Samba in SME creates problems for Windows PCs trying to set a "custom folder symbol" in Windows Explorer.

This is also the case for Win98, NT, 2000.

Desktop.ini stuff does work on Samba (say on SuSE, RH) depending on your smb.conf.

So depending on your vantage point: a Windoze problem with SME...

But not too critical.

It DOES affect PCs which are domain members, as the windows explorer offers "special" folders like "My Pictures" which have a feature to disaplay slides, etc.

The My Music Folder can also play MP3s, usw...

These features are gone if the desktop.ini isn't available.

Would that be the samba bugtraker or the Redhat bugtraker or the centos bugtracker or the sme bugtraker.

Andy says there's an issue with samba settings used in SME.

This really is not a bug in SME, but a function of how windows interfaces with Samba.  It is common to see this file pop up with migrating to Samba from a pure windows network.  One can safely delete this file with no adverse effects to the client machine.  

Samba 3 does provide a means for suppressing this annoyance with the following smb.conf parameter:
hide files = /desktop.ini/ntuser.ini/ntuser.*/

I'll raise a bug in the tracker, but I would think this is pretty low priority.
