Title: Disable Oplocks in V7?
Post by: rf131 on March 03, 2006, 03:08:07 AM
Hi,

Well, I guess I procrastinated long enough... the old NT 4 box died yesterday; it won't even power up!

Anyway, I have the disk out and are copying files to a Dell P/E 500SC, 2 80GB in RAID-1 running 7pre3.

My client uses GifTrak (Access) and QuickBooks (who knows this format?) which will be located there.  I did some testing back in August with an old workstation (maybe a 300 mhz pentium 128MB RAM) and it really screamed!  These particular applications were very fast.

In a thread about 6 months ago, someone suggested I disable oplocks to be more "conservative" with sharing.  There is only 2-3 users at a time worst-case using these files from their pc.  This suggestion was in the context of 6.0.1.

Is this still true with V7?

Wish me luck on this one!  Gotta "git er done" in the morning!

TIA,
Kevin

You want to turn off Opportunistic Locking if you are hosting Access DBs on any server otherwise you stand a good chance of corrupting your DB is you don't.

I have worked for a company that wrote software with an Access backend and if Op Locks we on (even in windows) it would cause nothing but headaches.

Girkers,

Thanks for your reply.  Very much to-the-point on the Access databases.

You turn off oplocks in the samba conf file, right?

Thanks,
Kevin

there was a contrib for v6 that you can try that configed oplocks. it was working in an earlier v7 but you probably want to test it out before you put it on a production box.

[edit] but you already figured it out http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=30985.0

Thanks kruhm,

I did the db configuration change and that worked OK.

I'll stick with the SME being as close to the ISO as I can and avoid any panels.
