Title: USB Cable Modem - will it work with SME 5?
Post by: Anne Anderson on January 02, 2002, 12:33:47 PM
Hi there,

I'm helping a friend set up an e-smith server for his home network.
I have set up several using the regular modems, and versions 4 to 5 of E-smith. He has an SMC 2202 USB cable modem and his ISP is Telstra Bigpond.  I haven't any experience with cable modems
Can anyone tell me if this is likely to work!

Regards,

Anne

Straight from the FAQ's.....

Does SME Server V5 support USB modems?
No, USB networking devices are not supported by the kernel shipping with SME Server V5.

See the FAQ entry regarding the 2.4 kernel.

Consult your ISP if you have been provided with a USB modem; your ISP may be able to provide or recommend an ethernet modem compatible with the services they are providing.

Is the modem in question a USB only modem? I haven't seen the model in question but I know that the USB modem that Optus use (motorola surfboard) also has a Cat 5 connector and can be used with e-smith no problem. If you leave these things to the install techs they'll hook them up via USB every time as most of these guys don't have a great deal of knowledge outside of the basic install stuff and are easily stumped. The only drama you normally have with Bigpond cable is with the Heartbeat which will disconnect you every five minutes if you don't do a bit of tweaking first. You can check out the info here

Hope this is of some help

E-Smith and Bigpond ADSL, highly recommended! had it running perfectly for 8 months and have converted all my friends to E-Smith as well (even the ones on dial up)

further to this, the SMC 2202 you refer to is just a USB ethernet adapter to connect to the modem. What model is the actual modem? it should be ethernet anyway
