Title: Sme V7 and Relay to Locally hosted Mail & Web Servers
Post by: OliHer on March 08, 2006, 03:32:16 PM
Hi,

I am a perfect newcomer in the SME usage and I am struggling since 2 days on 3 configuration issues :

1- How to redirect all the http traffic from both the internal and the external networks to an already installed Web server in the local network ? I cannot get my local users to connect to my web server eventhough it works perfectly from the Internet ( I have created redirection rules for ports 80, 25, 110, 143 to my Web/Mail server but)

2- How can I configure SME V7 to let my email traffic go out from my locally hosted mail server (I do recieve the mails from the external but nothing goes out)

3- On my Web/Mail server, I have a running fetchmail that was previously correctly retrieving my mails from my outside ISPs, but it does not work anymore.

4- final but last one, Is it possible to have Squidguard installed on SME V7 ?

If anyone has some hints for me on these subjects, I am more than happy to follow them.

Kind Regards,
Olivier

If most of functionality of SME is delegated to your other servers, why do you need SME? You may be better off with generic "firewall only" distribution, that have advanced configuration options. SME really shines if used as intended "all in one" small business server. You've just choose not the best tool for the job.

Hi Boris,

Thank you for this fast and honest answer.

I have been impressed by the top efficiency and easyness of the SME server and apart from the Web server functionnality still think that the other functions such as the Domain control, the Firewall and the rest I do confess that I might come back to it again but with less stress and maybe with some moves from my current server to SME.

Many thanks again,
Olivier

Port forwarding rules can only work from outside your local network.

For local users to connect to other LAN machines, they need to be configured to use DNS which points to the correct local machines. The SME server's Hostnames and addresses panels can be used to configure appropriate DNS information.
