Title: Second (Alias) IP HOWTO
Post by: sonoracomm on March 13, 2006, 06:11:21 AM
Hi folks,

I finally came across a reason to add a second (alias) IP address to the internal network interface...a new client has managed switches and VLANs.

So I did some research and I wrote a short HOWTO.  It's mighty short on flexibility, but it seems to work...so far.

There has to be a better way to do this...but this is all I could come up with on my own.  ;-)  Please let me know of any improvements or corrections and I'll fix the HOWTO.

Update: I have updated the howto for 802.1q VLAN.  It's more of a guide than a howto...

I also found this: http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Additional%20IP%20How%20To

Update: updated URL

Why not just add a line to your rc.local:
ipaddress add 192.168.0.2 dev eth0

If you only add a line to rc.local, you would have to reboot or manually reenter the command from the keyboard any time the networking got restarted for any reason.

Frankly, I don't know if it would be a problem at all, but I was afraid to just add a line to rc.local.  In my case, it's a customer machine and 85 users go down if something goes wrong...

...makes no sense.

It does make sense.  I just don't claim it makes total sense.  Nor do I ever tell any other poster their post "doesn't make sense"...it's rude.  Perhaps you don't care.

Here's an example:  From the command line, you type 'service network restart'.  If you only had an entry in rc.local, the second (alias) IP is now gone.  If you follow the howto, it's still there.

I don't know if any server-manager panels ever restart the networking, but if any of them do...

p.s.  I'm not familiar with the 'ipaddress add' command you specify, nor do I find it on a SME test box I have on hand.

Sorry I didn´t mean to be rude.
I meant it does not make sense modify if you´re afraid to break things.

I do care!

I have used this howto to add another IP address to my SME server. The problem is it doesn't work for DNS. I like to have one address for my ususl server functions and one address for gateway functions. Just as if the gateway had been a separate PC, wich it used to be before SME.

When I use the alias address as gateway address it works fine, but as DNS address it doesn't work. As DNS address I must use the "physical" address and not the alias.

Why? I thought an alias should be an alias under all circumstances. Can I change some config to get this to work?

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

How can I integrate the Vlan7?

Thx
