I am looking at getting a proper server, but I want to use sme as the OS, would any of these two specs work with sme 7
AMD DUAL CORE SYSTEM (SINGLE CPU)
or AMD ATHLON 64 X2 3800
ASUS A8N VM-CSM S939
2 X SEAGATE 200GB SATA HDD
1GB DDR400 RAM
QUANTUM STT3401A-SST 20/40GB TAPE DRIVE
INTEGRATED DISPLAY
1 X GB NIC,
1 X 10/100 NIC
or
INTEL P4 650 3.4GHz LGA775
INTEL 915GAVL
2 X SEAGATE 200GB SATA HDD
1GB DDR 400 RAM
QUANTUM STT3401A-SST 20/40GB TAPE DRIVE
SERVER CASE
INTEGRATED DISPLAY
2 X 10/100 NIC
Thanks, Russell

You may wish to give a bit more info.
Certainly, that's an abundant spec for a text-mode Linux such as SME.
From my experience, I'd recommend PATA disks over SATA ones. They're less hassle to set up.
You don't specify what kind of interface the tape drive will use to connect; that's significant.

.. the tape drive model gives it away, the STT3401A-SST is an IDE Travan drive (SST - Travan, A - IDE).
Personally, I would forget the Travan drive and go for a nice SCSI DDS4 setup (new or s/h), more robust and tapes are cheaper; of course if you already have the drive and tapes you might as well use it.

What I am mainly concerned about is SATA drives and a backup system
The system will be a web & email server + file server maybe even a vpn eventually, will have a heavy workload on the internal network.
Is SATA suitable on sme7?
Also, what would be recommended for backup system, i.e.; what brand
The less hassles the better, I am looking for a straightforward installation on a new system.
Has anyone used sme with dual core AMD or would dual p4 processors be a better option
Thanks, Russell

SATA works out of the box in SME7 either as single disks or RAID sets.

I'm thinking about going with SATA, only because of price. To purchase a server with SCSI is a more expensive option and cost 3 times the price.
What is the problem with SATA, is it really that bad
What about AMD's Dual Core Processor?? Not Daul Processors.
And a recommendation for Tape Backup, what brand does sme 7 like

SATA is excellent, much faster than PATA and an equal of SCSI for most systems. SCSI may still have the edge on large, database intensive apps, but I would be surprised if you see any performance issues with SATA.
Avoid the cheap SATA "fakeraid" RAID cards. Either buy a decent one (e.g. Adaptec) which makes the disks appear as a single disk to Linux, or let Linux do software RAID. It does that well - faster and more robustly than many cheap SATA 'fakeraid" cards.

I haven't tried one, but it should work. Why don't you try one and report? It's almost certainly overkill for most server uses. Heavy (and I mean heavy) webmail use might make it worthwhile, but most modern CPUs have plenty of horsepower.

Pretty much any SCSI tape should work "out of the box".
IDE tape drives may work, using ide-scsi emulation (see bug 788).
I haven't heard reports either way of SATA tape drives. They should work just like SCSI tape drives.
Floppy tape drives - just say no (I don't think they even work under the 2.6 kernel, but say no anyway).

Hi, I'm trying to get my A8N board working and it's giving me a lot of trouble. SME doesn't support the Marvel lan adapter out of the box. I disabled it and put 2 10/100 d-link nics on there. The nics are unstable. I can't get one of the nics to register. It'll showup in the Configuration panel and it would connect to the internet but then it would fail and I would loose connection. Has anyone experienced this?

Text mode? Service-mode, more like, considering you don't even need a monitor connected ;-)

From my experiences, I think you will do better all round with the Intel 775 Box.
I wondered about AMD Dual Core and had the opportunity to run up a copy of 7.2 on a Foxconn board the other day. It loaded and setup just fine in server only mode but I didnt have the time to thrash it. It certainly didnt seem to be super fast tho. Not as fast as the 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Skt 775 with 2 X 160Gb SATA drives I played with a few weeks earlier. Each had 1Gb DDR2 RAM
I used server only mode because I didnt have the time to shag about adding a second NIC. It did not have the Marvelan Lan card mentioned above so no issues.
A bit subjective but hope it helps.

hi,
i am running mine on a spare kit made up of:
AMD X2 3800 (socket 939)
mb: asus a8n-e
hd: two IDE seagate
ram: 2 gb
i have installed the i586 image on top and it is very good.
and will be installing VMWARE to support other services.
