Hi all
Is is required to use one of the free www.yi.org dns etc. or can SME become a DNS server ?
I guess the question is really What is the purpose of using SME as the DNS server ? And can this be done on cable internet that uses dynamic IP's
Please advise???

Please advise???
Read the manual.

HA !,
Shows what you know
I've already read that, many times, and this topic is not answered directly.
In other words you have no idea.
Just say you don't know
But thanks for trying
:hammer:
This topic is now considered closed I've moved on to getting a static ip upgrade from comcast and ditching the dynamic since they block port 80,25,21 etc

cute
My suggestion to read the manual was not for my benefit -it's for yours, as you seem to be having lots of difficulty. You're going to continue to struggle until you learn and comprehend. While the software is given free of charge, support is not and it's your responsibility to learn and understand how to use it. It's neither mine nor anybody else's responsibility to answer your questions or teach you how to use it.
perhaps you're phrasing your question wrong.
or perhaps you missed the part of the installation where it says
"You should not enter the address of your ISP's DNS servers here, as the server is capable of resolving all Internet DNS names without this additional configuration."
or perhaps you missed the part in the handbook where it says
"...contains a fully functional caching DNS server, and in almost all cases you will not need to enter the address for a DNS server. However, some corporate firewalls restrict DNS queries from internal DNS servers, so you need to supply the address for an external DNS server."
or perhaps you didn't take the time to go through the FAQ where it answers the question "Why does SME recommend to not use a primary or secondary external DNS server?"
or perhaps you didn't take the time to use the SEARCH button in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Well, once again you are incorrect, and confused about this topic
I'm not going to continue struggling, I'm not haveing problem and you are very confused about this for some reason
I'm just simply asking a yes or no question out of curiousity.
And no one suggested that it's your responsibility to do anything at all.
So now that we've cleared that up, about the DNS server
you seemed to be confused about what this says in the manual, and again clearing up the fact in my original responses I've mentioned that I've read this many times (hello McFlyyyyy is there anyone there)
Anyhow so what your indicating is what I've already read regarding DNS lookups , however this also is refering to DNS internal server in my opinion and not via true (domain name server)
My original question is still valid even after your answers and references to the manual do now specifically answer the question as I've indicated previously
Again if you don't know just say so
Re-clarification
Will the SME server work as a self contained DNS host to host a (www.???.com domain name which will be found on the net as with any other DNS host.
From your description your indicating that Yes, however your reasons indicate No. only querries and lookups.
I would guess no since you still need to use dynsdns.org or yi.org anyhow
Why would you need those if you can host your own domain ?
Anyhow this post is closed nothing to see here, and certainly no answers
Why even have a forum anyhow if all the answers are the same, (read the manual) what a wasted post
I would appreciate that if people do not feel like answering or if they don't have an answer please don't post at all.
It is not very helpful.
The forums are suppose to be helpful since there is no support for free software, this is the support friends helping each other.
And if people can't help or won't help, then to say read the manual, well that just not helpful and should not be posted at all.
:hammer:

then why ask the question
what a wasted post

Ok
If you read through this site it wil guide you through how a dns server system works then you can set up your own dns servers and intergrate your sme server into this typology i hope you have plenty of £££ or $$$

Thanks for the reply, I'm not planning on settinp up a DNS server, however I was only curious if SME could do it on it's own,
I do thanks you for the straight forward answer, thats all I really wanted to know is if it could be done.
Regarding having lots of money for this, why would someone need a bunch of money to do this and what other equipment would be needed?
Where would the costs come in?
And thanks again for link I really appreciate your helpfulness.
If you know of any other DNS e-books or info I would be interested to read on this subject

First of all get youself a book on bind sugested http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dns4/
next go to iana and buy a block of ip adresses to run you dns, www, mail, ftp and any other ones you can think of. Have your secondry dns server co-located some were else so you have a permant identity on the net this also includes a secondry mail server.
You will now start to understand why people use a custom dns group like dyndns, this uses your ip adress suplied by you isp to map to your sme server has it updates if you have a none static ip or a dial-up connection. If you have a static ip buy the domain you want and go to ie: dyndns and subscribe to the custom service and you can set up your dns records including mx records for mail. Dyndns also supply you with a mail back-up server if yours go down at a cost.
This way is still cheaper than setting up your own servers.
