Title: Software RAID and Hot-Swap
Post by: fargo on March 24, 2006, 05:15:47 AM
Does SME 7 "software" RAID support SATA hot-swap? What about hot-spare?

TIA

No, RedHat linux doesn't yet support SATA hot-swap, so neither does SME 7.

Does this apply just to a drive that is part of the RAID? or any drive?

I had been thinking of using an extra SATA drive as a removable backup device. But if there is no hot-swap support, that won't work.

Thanks.

Thank you for the info.

Silicon Image says its SiI 3114 SATA RAID card supports SATA hot-swap. Will it work under SME 7?

Maybe this will be provided in future kernel versions???

I'm sure if Reinhold chimed in, he could give us his 2 cents.

Does anyone know if there has been a change in this status or if there is likely to be soon ?

I'm planning to upgrade the drives in a server and am wondering whether to buy hot swap SATA caddies.

I know that this post is couple of years old, but I was wondering if right now SME supports Hot-Swap SATA drives?
I am planning to have two hot-swap drives RAID1 in the server. Once a week I would pull one of the drives and exchange it with my 3rd backup hot-swap SATA drive. So the RAID would take care of syncing of the drives. And next week I would repeat the process.
That would be a very quick and painless backup process without need to reboot the server.

SME7 is still based on CentOS 4 which is based on RedHat Enterprise Linux 4. Do you see any announcement of Hot-Swap support in release notes?
