how do u tell version of sme. whether 6.5rc1 etc ?????

Its shown in the server-manager.
Also you you can see it on on root logons and inside "/etc/e-smith-release" file.

And it is also somehere in the internal database... used it recently and posted it somewhere on the forum, but cannot remember the exact location nor the post.
