When Spamassassin and the Virusscanner are activated on the server (SME7-RC1) it takes up to several minutes until mail through SMTP is accepted by the server. SMTP delivery, also from the internal network, is quicker when Spamassassin is disabled and also much quicker if both spamassassin and Virusscanner are disabled. On the Forum I only found a link suggesting opening up a lot of outbound ports. (which are open anyway?!)

Does it speed up the process if there is a way to let the server first accept the mails and then later do the checking on Virus and Spam materials? Thanks!!

As has been stated OVER and OVER...Please report all bugs to the bug tracker.
You will get a much better response if you post bugs to the bug tracker...Button is on the left.

I have also been experiencing the same problem with slow smtp on outgoing emails. After searching many SME sites, I found your posting. But sadly not answer posted in response to your posting. Have you found any solution since then ? Would appreciate any helpful advise.

Don't flame! No one benefits from these messages. Off-course everyone can understand that you are disappointed that you get no reply to your question but it might well be that no one knows the answer.
You could have posted some details. For instance if I read your messages I would not be wondered that using spam-assasin and virusscan takes up more time to handle mail, extra actions to be take come at a price (that the price is a bit high might indicate a problem).
Maybe usefull information would have been to know for instance if this goes for text only messages or that it only appears while sending messages with (large) attachements.
So for the future when asking a question:
- Be polite
- Be as detailed as possible

What's the hardware configuration of your server? If it's underpowered, sure, it'll take awhile to process. Since viruses are rejected immediately, you won't be able to accept messages and process them later.
Personally I wouldn't run SME 7 with virus & spam filtering enabled on less than a Pentium III/450 with 256 megs of RAM.
If outgoing SMTP is a big problem, bypass the transparent SMTP proxy in the email settings and route from workstations directly to your ISP's SMTP server.
And you should upgrade to RC2.
And everyone who answers questions here volunteers his or her time, so you have no right to expect anything.
