Title: wireless nic suggestions
Post by: Matt on April 16, 2006, 09:58:02 AM
Can anyone give me a recomendation for a wireless pci nic that works with sme 7  I have tried the Belkin one which isn't supported very easily, I would rather just plug something in a not have to fiddle around.

I am right in thinking I can replace the nic which connects to my LAN with a wireless card?

I am trying to get sme to run on an apple wireless network which uses an apple extreme base station.

Does anyone have any experience of setting up and using such a network?

Many thanks

Matt

I myself would plug the SME box into a router that has wireless capabilities much less head aches as well as a bit more secure ... thats the way I have it anyway.

Mine is a belkin 4 port router as well as wireless so I can connect any type of pc's into it.

And make sure you don't get lazy with security.

Regards,

Tib

I did a wireless recently and I would concur with Tib. (Mix of wireless & wired)

When I went looking for NIC's I found I was going to have to hack the distro more than I was happy doing. I used a DLink for no other reason than I could get my hands on one quickly. There are heaps of choices.

End result is tidy setup which makes it easier to maintain & troubleshoot. No unsupported drivers to break. I didnt use any special security between the Wireless Router and the server (just a CAT 5 cable to a switch port) and WPA from the wkstns. Took less than 30 minutes to deploy, the server distro is still "as shipped"and it all works just fine.
