Hi,
I know that by default you cannot write in an ibay with the ibay accound and password.
FROM THE MANUAL:
It is possible to upload files using FTP, but to do so you must login to the server with a valid user name, not the i-bay name. That user account must be a member of the group that has been given write permission for the i-bay (configured on the i-bay screen).
But I do NOT want to create a user for every client. This client will have email, webmail also if I do that.
I just want to create FTP users with a dedicated FTP directory or ibay.
I have searched the forum and the web for a couple of hours now but I cannot find the solution.
PLEASE HELP
/Renee

I'm not sure but by default I believer SME only lets you add users, which creates the user account/email account/home directory for ftp/ in which you then can add to a group which will have access to that ibay.
I think the create user only for ftp without any email accounts etc. perhaps this is a addon solution or something that you will have to install, php script or something

We created a seperate user for ftp use and added it to an ftp group account.
Everyone here has the username and password for that bay for use as a generic FTP bay.
If it was only a local machine I could set it up to not need passwords locally, but due to it being accessible from outside, it probably wouldn't be to bright a thing to do ;).

It does not look likely that SME does have a solution build in.
We have a lot of clients who all want their own useraccount and their own data in a customer specific folder. I know that I'll loose a lot of clients when I use 1 folder for all of them.
Maybe there are some smart guys (or girls) who can figure outhow to disable email for a user or get the ibay user access to upload files into the ibay.
When I create an ibay like "customer1" a "customer1" user gets created. But even if I add this user to a FTP group on the console I cannot upload anything :-(

Strictly out of curiousity why is it a big deal for them to have an e-mail account created on the server ? They won't even know about it to use it.

This is a big deal for me!
If someone finds out he can access webmail he can send email though my mailserver with any from address (horde gives you the oppertunity to do that)

If this is such a big issue you might be better of having two servers, one for ftp and the other for your mailserver. If you move the ftp to another server you can port forward the ftp to a seperate dedicated ftp server.

Hi Renee
To allow our many business contacts to upload and download files on our SME, we have installed Mambo, DocMan and UberUpload running a website.
The Mambo admin interface allows creation of its own internal user database with individual upload/download rights for each user.
We find that our clients prefer to use browsers rather than ftp software and these Mambo Username/Password combinations give no access to the SME server OS.
This may be an alternative approach to solve your situation.
HTH, David.
