Title: Spamassassin causing server to become IO Bound
Post by: gmoney on April 30, 2006, 05:07:58 AM
I am running the latest SME 7.0rc1.  So far SME is great, the only problem is that when I turn on spam filtering the server becomes IO bound with 99% IO wait. I check top and I see spamd at the top of the list.   I turn off spam filtering, and IO wait goes down to about 2%.  This is a P4 3GHz with 2 gig of ram and a single SATA disk.  We only have about 60 users.

Is there any way to tune spamassassin?  Is it possible to get it to write to a tempfs?  Alternativily has anyone tried an alternative?  I've read that MailScanner can speed up SA, but I can't find any info on configuring it with qmail.  There are also ASSP and DSPAM which look promising, but again not enough info.

RC2 is the current "realease" of SMEServer, I would get RC2 on your machine and if that doesn't cure your server load problem may I suggest you log a bug in the bugtracker, spamassassin shouldn't bring SME to a stop.
