Title: how best to migrate SME 7.0rc1 to a new server
Post by: Makje on May 29, 2006, 10:39:04 AM
Topictitle pretty much says what i mean to ask you people: how can i best copy all my settings, users and files from an existing server to a new server?

I've installed SME 7.0 rc1 on the new server so that is equal to the old server. Now i need to get all my settings and files on the new server.

I've tried a 'backup to desktop' but even when i left out all my files (about 20Gb in documents and stuff) it was still 2Gb and it crashed on restoring it to the new server.

Can i just plug in a usb harddisk and copy the /etc/e-smith and the /home/e-smith maps to it and from there to the new server? I tried to do it this way but then i get a permissions error when copying to usbdisk....

How does someone copy all this when you don't have a tape to do a full backup?

Restore directly from the "old" hard disk.

See the technique explained here
