Ok what is my problem. I've got sme server 7.x installed but i cant reach it.
My router, speedtouch 716, is set up to let port 80 through on given ip adress. also the https port and the ftp port. And the dns server adress is the internal ip adress of the router.
I can ping the sme server from an xp host in the same domain. But if i try to reach the sme server i end up on the router instead. If i ping from the sme server to the router all is well. If i try to reach the internet it wont work.
On the router/modem i dont see the sme server in it's devices list.
Has anyone encountered the same problems ? and solved them?

Hello qizl,
I'm using also a 716. I have it setup to:
1) allocate an IP address to to my SME box, it uses (if I'm not wrong) the mac address from the SME nic to always attribute the
same IP. (This way, I could setup the SME box with a fixed IP address).
2)pass all traffic from the internet to the IP address of my SME box.
If this is what you want ... I can check what I did put as setup in the 716.

if this is a Bell Canada type , you may find the speedtouch has two modes, one acts as a router, the other as pass through
they were a pain in the ass, I try to avoid them as they seemed to have a habit of resetting!

@bierken
i would very much like to know how you set it up. Where do you fill in mac adress ? Did your 716 actually see the sme server as a device?
i'm thinking of a faulty nic maybe.
@other how do i know if i have a canada bell ?

I've learned that ppoe devices are oftem custom built to specs of the local phone company/isp , and are generally configured to support Windows XP Home right out of the box
Just figuring ut the default IP address can be a challenge as the same IP may be used by both the computer and the modem!
For LINUX or Windows Servers, you usually waste time on the documentation and then call tech support and hope you get someone intelligent!
Bell Canada is a large phone company/ISP in Canada, their version of the Speedtouch isn't the same as other Canadian phone companies, so searching the web just confused things.
I ended up using an XP machine which worked immediately. Once I had it working I made notes, learned how to access the Speedtouch setup menu ( NOT as shown in the doucuments that were about a year out of date ) and was able to configure it for LINUX only after tech support told me how to configure the SpeedTouch

@bierken
This was exactly how i supposed it had to work
But unfortunatly i get no device listing from my sme server
in my st 716. I suspect a faulty nic or the computer is to old for my nic
The older nic i used is EISA not PCI so maybe sme 7.x cant handle it.
However this is a totally different problem. :roll:
Thanks for the help i now got new directions to look at. :-)
