Title: ftp access to outside webspace?
Post by: Alex Ziemann on January 19, 2002, 06:13:25 PM
Hi, im  using e-smith in office and at home. Both servers are running a "real-world" domain, which is (as for webspace and email) outside at our provider.

Both servers run gateway/server mode with permanent adsl connection.

Both servers i am unable to reach my own outside webspace related to that servers domain via ftp - simply no access. E.G:

client.domain1.de ->server castor.domain1.de -> webspace.domain1.de does not work, but
client.domain1.de ->server castor.domain1.de ->  webspace.domain2.de works like a charm.

How can i fix that? I need ftp-access to all my webspaces via all my servers!

Should i use an ftp-client from the server console? Which one?

Alex,

Have you tried using an IP address instead of a domain name ie ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx instead of ftp://mydomain.co.nz

I have e-smith 4.1.2 and this is how I get to my websites that are hosted by my ISP. ftp://mydomain.co.nz only gets me to the e-smith server.

Cheers
Ross

just a question: if the domain is being hosted elsewhere, why use the domain on the e-smith at all? why not assign e-smith a domain like me.local?
I use my e-smith like that; basically, the office intRAnet is www.me.local. we use mydomain.com for our email/external site, etc., and none of the clients have any trouble accessing the site (because e-smith knows it isn't the host).

if you have a reason for setting e-smith to your real-world domain, what is it? just curious.

The only reason the domain is set like this is that I don't know how to unset it. If you know how I can unset it I would appreciate the information.

Thanks

Reasons for using "real-world-domain" on e-smith:

1. If we do not, all our e-mails will be rejected by provider (for relay-control) or will get "me.local.net" as sender-adress; this will make it complicated to reply :-)
2. I am using (on one site) and am planning (at office site) to use full dyndns-support with our permanent adsl-connection. So i want to host my sites on my server fully and just transfer the outside domain and mail to my own server. This makes it easier to administer for me.
3. On some more heavy-traffic sites i am planning, i still want to use my outside webspace for performance reasons. Our upload speed is just 256 kbits, so dyndns will not work with heavy traffic.
