I have an existing SOHO network, which uses the workgroup name of 3TOWERS. I am in the process of adding a new fileserver, and thought I would give SME a try. I've got it all installed and setup, but I have run into a major snag. The server admin will NOT accept the workgroup name because it does not start with a alphabetic character.
I already have another server functioning, plus multiple workstations using Win98, WinXP, and Linux with the existing workgroup configuration.
How can I manually edit the files needed to keep my existing workgroup name, instead of forcing my whole network to be changed over to a new worgroup name just because of SME?

I would log this in the bug tracker... link on the left.
Whilst you may be able to find a work around, sure it would be better for everyone to find a permanent solution.

See bug 1607 (http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1607).

I noticed this had been entered into the bug tracker earlier today :-)
I also see a possible workaround has also been posted.

The Work Around posted in the Bug Tracker does the trick
--------------------------------------------------------------------
config setprop smb Workgroup 3towers
After that issue the following command to implement your changes:
signal-event workgroup-update

Took me a while to figure out I had to log in as 'root' in order to get a command line console, though!
Thanks for the Help!
Now, I just have to follow the instructions on how to speed up the hard drives. In the default installed state, performance is sluggish to awful, to say the least!
Either that or the software RAID uses a *ell of a lot of cpu cycles!
