Good place to start is with the Manual ... http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME7Manual
1) How do I get to the root of the server (so i can make some changes from the root not from the panel)
... 6.2. Accessing the Linux Root Prompt
3) How to Get webMail?
... Chapter 16. Webmail
etc ...
Have a look here then if you cannot find all the simple things re-post the harder ones.
You can also do some searches on the other topics ... I'm sure most have been answered.
I don't play arround with .PL CGI etc so can't help you there.
Setting up e-mail clients etc is not hard ... should be in the manual as well.
can they use Autoresopnders, mailinglist?
These are all setup using your e-mail client ... there is an addon for the SME server called "Vacation Message" ... that does auto responding straight from the SME server form Dungog website.

Tib

I can answer a few
1. From a keyboard and monitor (or putty) log in as username root, and use the root/admin password
3. Goto https://www.yourdomain.com/webmail . You must have webmail enabled in server-manager first.
4. email clients must be configured for ssl. Use port 465 for the smtp port. If you are going to allow them to retreive their email from outside the lan, you will have to enable it in server-manager.

1) How do I get to the root of the server (so i can make some changes from the root not from the panel)As long as you are in the admin interface, go to menu option 2, configure server. As you progress through the menus, you will come to an item for login. It is currently set to automatic. Change it to login, and continue through the process without changing anything else. After you exit from the admin screen, it should say your server name:login. Type in root, and hit enter. Then it will ask for the root password. Type in the root/admin password and hit enter. now you should be at a command line interface. To close the interface type exit, or press control d.

If you have the admin interface up you can just press ALT-F2 to open a second console session, login in there with root / password.
Use ALT-F1 to get to the Admin console again and ALT-F2 to switch back to the second console session. You can use several sessions, F1, F2, F3 etc.
