I've seen a lot of posts saying that an upgrade from a standard 6.0.1 (without contribs) is fairly painless. Has anyone had any success upgrading from 5.6? Mine is only a very small system - 5 users, and all I really need to copy are the mail files.

With only five users I would be tempted to do a complete fresh install rather than upgrade, however if you choose to upgrade 5.6 > 7 here are a few pointers.
This may be one thing to be aware of:

Make sure you have a known good backup bedore the upgrade
If you do decide to setup a new box for SME7:
With only 5 users I would be temped to use an IMAP compatible email client to copy the mail from the old server to new servers. You may prefer to have a look at the command line tool here:
