aka [ANNOUNCE] advproxy & urlfilter author offers his code
VOTE IN THE POLL ABOVE!
advproxy & urlfilter products by Marco Sondermann is a brilliant Web GUI for Squid & Dansgardian. I've used it with SmoothWall and ipCop. It's just as good as Dungog's Dansgardian, but Marco's is free.
I contacted Marco, author of advproxy & urlfilter, and of course he will allow any serious coder to port this to SME.
Coding is beyond my ability so I am relying on the SME community.
Recently Endian Firewall ( http://www.efw.it/ ) has ported Marco's efforts into their product because Marco, a one man team, can only support smoothwall and ipcop. Does any developer wish to take this on this port? Please reply to this and contact Marco:

Another idea is to somehow have SME coexist with Webmin only for a few select modules like Dansgardian.
I converted $249AU or $99AU first year Dungog Consession License and it equals $187US for lifetime or $75US for 1st year. Either is a bit steep for my home use.
Please don't reply with "I think SquidGuard, the CLI, Privoxy, Antivirus plug-in, yada yada, would be better/more important" because this message focuses on Dansguardian. It's the best, hands down. I don't need "better" ideas because I've already tried used them. Really, all I'm looking for and hoping to see is a developer with the same desire.
Read far below for Bounty information in red (message #13). To make a pledge, just add a message to this thread with your email address. Protect your address.

vanasdale as this is going to take time and effort by someone, are you offering any bounty for whoever codes this for SME server?

This is simply an alert and a poll. I'm not a coder, but I'd hope a port of existing code may be much simpler than to code from scratch. Someone who may be shy to commit themselves to a solution may find a port easier? -- I dunno.
If I'm not paying $75US for Dungog Dansguardian plus $57US per year thereafter, then would less money be enough for a bounty?
I'm trying to replace my SmoothWall for SME (single box solution). I like additional features SME offers, but the ease of maintaining the content filter on the fly for my 2 daughters is a bigger priority.

I think this is a great idea. I have no clue how long it would take to make something like this work with sme, but I still think this is a great idea. I have used Dansguardian and it works great with sme. I have also used it with Clarkconnect and it is even better since there is a nice gui to go along with it. I am sure that there are some people out there that could give a little bit if the person who has the ability to do this asked. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, perhaps a dedicated coder could set his price.
1. A price that would be achievable by several people making pledges.
2. Dedicated would mean that fixes would be implemented within reason.
- Bugs may be discovered in early releases
- SME updates may break the contrib
- Include source code incase the coder loses interest
-
Don't forget to take the poll at the top of these posts.
There are a lot of views on this entry, but only 30 votes. :-)

Squidguard contrib doesn't work with sme 7.... and dansguardian is better than squidguard..... so it would be great to have quickly a gui just to do what the squidguard's gui offered to do: add or remove url.... this in the first time...
But i'm not a dev so i can't help.... sorry

Thanks for those who are helping promote a port of advproxy & urlfilter by Marco.
Tell the rest to read the red print up top. ;-)

You are aware of the command line version, available for free, see
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver//contribs/rmitchell/smeserver/howto/dansguardian%20instal%20&%20configure%20HOWTO%20for%20sme%20server.htm
It does not really need maintenance, in many cases just set it up initially and then forget it is there.
On those occasions you may need to tweak the config, it's very easy to make changes to config files via the command line anyway, if you follow the howto steps.

I second what Ray says, if a GUI is desired there's a squidguard contrib half-way done that I would suggest.

How about privoxy? Depending on what kind of filtering you're looking for, privoxy might work and it has a web configuration interface. Its "inappropriate content" filtering is a little weak though, it's keyword based. I haven't tried it on SME yet...

BOUNTY PLEDGE INFO!
$ 25 wallyrp
$ 25 vanasdale
$100 RvLardin
$150 Total[/color]
28 People have voted that they would like advproxy and urlfilter ported to SME. That's alot of votes compared to other polls in the forums.
Set your price.
What do the bounty payers expect? (bounty payers yet tbd)
-Fair Price, this is a port... not from scratch
-Keep as true as possible to Marco's original code for SmoothWall & IPcop
-After the initial bounty the product is GPL (free), Like Marco's version
-Repair discovered bugs
-Source code must be available with each release
-Updates are not required, only bug fixes
checkout urlfilter.net & advproxy.net, contact the author for code. He is willing to share.

Good Afternoon,
I'm serious about this issue and will put $25USD towards the amount of the bounty.
-
.. perhaps asking Marco if he knows anyone who could do the dev, and to also estimate the cost in time & $$$, would be a good start.
At least with these estimates we can see if this is feasible.
If feasible a 'pot' could be started to hold donations until the required total amount is available.
From a quick look this would not be a trivial task (especially as it replaces some of the squid binaries).

Good Afternoon,
Well, from the screenshots I seen on the sites mentioned in this thread, I'm very impressed with the work. I'll probably go ahead and try out IPCop with these add-ons installed. I have a Celeron 400Mhz laying around to use for that. I'd ultimately like to see this integrated into SME.
In my opinion, Dungog has done great work but based on appearances, this GUI looks a little more in-depth. Please note that this is not meant to detract from the extremely professional Dungog contribs. I have influenced a number of schools to purchase that contrib and still believe in it.
Got to love all the disclaimers you have to put out there nowadays. Dadblimey!

He did not answer my question on price setting, but here is his reply:
I've never used SME. For this reason I don't know how much time and effort it might take. Porting code from IPCop to SmoothWall can be done within a few minutes (for AdvProxy), but on the other hand there are some small conceptional differences between them that prevented some URLfilter features (time constraints, user quota, etc.) to be ever ported from IPCop to SmoothWall. Regards, Marco

May be it will be easier to help Stephen (Dungog) with his DansGuardian contrib.
This contrib *is* SME-compliant and code from dungog *is* GPL. I consider it will be faster to ask Stephen having a look at the product you wish and estimate the time/price to modify his contrib.
In fact Bounties or distribution fees are two diffrent ways to renumerate coders, but the purpose is the same : getting GPL contribs.
If Stephen offer a price, I'll be OK to feed the bounty of 100$.
Thks.
BTW : no need of webmin under SME, we have the server/user-manager and a lot of monitoring tools (including, of course, SME7ADMIN :). All contribs *must* be compliant enough to take place in the server-manager.

I am losing steam on this and have reverted back to SmoothWall.
However, I will monitor this thread to promote it.
If I owned a big biz, I would not hesitate to buy Dungog's software. But I hope SME will provide native GUI for Dansguardian.
(the Medium and Enterprise services I would expect to keep non-business surfing to nill would be nice for a Small biz too)

Just to let everyone know, there are a few more features in the IPcop version.

Offer a pledge, cheapskates!

Offer a pledge, cheapskates!
I do not see this as a worthwhile exercise. Reason: Dans Guardian, while an excellent product, is not actually, really, licensed as GPL (see note).
:(
There's some wriggling but it ends up that it is NOT free to use for commercial purposes. That's contrary to the spirit at least. Look at what all the developers here are releasing GPL-wise. And Red Hat. And Linus...
(Thanks guys!)
So DG is not a general solution to the problem. If this went ahead it would only be useful to non-commercial users (unless they buy a DG license). This may be why Dungog charges - no? We'll leave DG out of our portfolio.
<rant warning opinion coming> As a side note, *almost anything* to do with Smoothwall has been a bit similarly slimy right from day 1 (IMHO & E). We use IPCop - written by ex-Smoothwall developers of the same opinion. </unrant>
Charging for GPL is not the problem - it's the wriggling IMHO that is the problem...

Note: For all commercial[2] use, upon your downloading, DansGuardian 2 is licensed under the GPL, however permission to download DansGuardian from this, or any mirror[3], website is restricted.
The restrictions on the downloading for commercial use are that you may only download it once for free. This will enable you to try out the software before making a decision to purchase a commercial licence to download it. In order to download updates, bug fixes, etc, you must purchase a download licence.

The GUI on the 2 products, advproxy and urlfilter, is awesome. I continue to use it in IPcop.
You have a valid point of the Dansguardian backend is not "free", which I believe.
With this said, I hope to show a great interest of 40 votes on this topic of a GUI for squidguard, similar to urlfilter and advproxy for a developer.
This poll may have the largest count of participants of any poll in the SME forums.
