Title: Up to 7.0 and back down to 6!
Post by: edtest on July 13, 2006, 11:37:13 AM
Hi,

We have a SME 6 server that has been running for a while. last night a fatal disk death thing occured - e2fsck doesn't seem to be able to recover it.

We would like to load our backup onto a new server, while the old one is sent away to see if it can be recovered. Sadly, the only server with enough disk space, that is quickly available has an Intel SRCS16 SATA raid controller - no drivers available for SME6.

So, we are downloading SME 7, and hoping to load that onto the new server, and then restore the SME6 backup onto it.

How much of a nasty mess is this going to be? Have the user & password files, and group organisations changed that much between versions?

Is this even possible?

Cheers,

Ed

We backed up a 6.0.1-01 Server and restored to a 7.0 Server. Worked like a charm. :-D

.. also depends on how 'vanilla' the old server was, the closer to a stock SME6 it was the better your chances that the restore will just work; be prepared for a bit of messing with restored custom templates if the old server had been modified.

Cheers

It was pretty vanilla, smeghead.

I have found the thread by silasp, that quite closely approximates what I want to do, esp. with the rsync and things.

Cheers,
