Title: HELP us switch from MS-Windows Server 2000
Post by: AlNeumann on July 25, 2006, 04:33:01 AM: Hello! We're looking into replacing our Windows 2000 Server w/ a Unix/Linux 'substitute' -or is SMEServer the 'real McCoy'?
I just installed SMEServer for the first time, and none of us are Linux users... so I have to ask the basics: Is there really no GUI to work from? We flashed thru the screen-shots and were left thinking there was a GUI.javascript:emoticon(':cry:')
We currently don't know Linux, but that isn't stopping us. javascript:emoticon(':-x')
We are sick of MS/BS if you know what I mean. Short of a GUI to get indoctrinated, what's the best route to take to get familiar with SmeServer.

Post by: girkers on July 25, 2006, 04:54:51 AM: Whilst there is no "GUI" as such, you administrator the server via a web browser so for all intents and purposes it does have a "GUI". Once you have SME installed point your browser as https://ip-address/server-manager and you will then see the "GUI" of SME.

Post by: AlNeumann on July 25, 2006, 05:21:26 AM: Thanks for the quick note. Yes, I've tried the https as in the doc's chapter 8, but found I can't connect... -Yet the ip I'm trying is correct and I can ping the smeserver by either dns or ip. I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Normally the server-manager is only allowed to be accessed from within the local network. Did you try to acess it from the local network or did you try remopte access? You can configure it to be remotely accessible but this is not preferred, you'd better configure a VPN tunnel for that...

You may not have the server configured correctly for your network.

I suggest you read the manual(s) as it sounds like you may have not. You will not be aware of many of the sme servers features until you read the manual(s) and could well be disappointed, as you were already with a supposed lack of GUI control panel, which the server did in fact have !

Okay, to confirm: The server was configured with the correct ip, subnet, and gateway..., and on the same subnet as the XPclient PC (in the same local network) I used to attempt to access the Web admin pages. RE: I can ping it, by ip and dns, just fine from the XPclient.

Okay Ray, no ----. -i.e.: As I mentioned re. chapter 8. Also no gui is really needed, like with IPCop only with yet a more robust system.

Do you have physical access to your server? If so try and login as root and see what the log files in /var/log/httpd/ file read especially the ones for the admin part.

You can also try to access the server-manager using the text browser (lynx) from the command line once you are logged in as root using the following url: https://localhost/server-manager.

Post by: calisun on August 04, 2006, 05:09:17 AM: you can also get text version of server-manager by logging in as admin from command line. And choose option #6 from menu that comes up.
