Title: Any way to measure users' internet traffic?
Post by: Jim_Henderso on August 07, 2006, 08:57:52 AM
I'm in the process of setting up SME 7.0 for a non-profit organisation that is like a cooperative of individuals.

Currently each person does email and web surfing by using the organisation's account with an ISP, and reporting the time connected, and the secretary charges their accounts at the end of the month.

When the SME server is installed, everyone will be able to connect concurrently through it, instead of treading on each other's toes using the same phone line, so this will be a great advantage. (I'm planning to have short duration calls on the dial-up line.)

But I have not been able to find in the documentation (or by searching this site) any way of finding out who used how much of the connect time. Is there a way of getting a report of megabytes transferred each month perhaps, along with the user who ordered it, or the computer it went to?

Thanks for your help,
    Jim

Hi Jim
I have used  SARG for versions previous to 7 and there appears to be a contrib for 7. It gives breakdown on useage but not time per user IP address.
Regards
Brian

Maybe this might help you: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=32518.0 as it seems to me that you are looking for som sort of hotel/internet cafe billing system.

Thanks, Brian and cactus for your suggestions.

I found the rpm for SARG on SME and a howto, and installed it easily. I have yet to try it with some real traffic and look at the reports and see how useful I can make them by adjusting the configuration file.

Cactus, the link you sent was to something about Squirrel mail, but I searched the forum for "internet cafe" and found the thread you were referring to. The bottom line was a reference to a hardware box solution, and I think I'll try to get SARG working first.

Thanks again for your responses,
    Jim
