Just installed SME Server 7 in server and gateway mode. I am not ready to host my own web and email server and so plan to continue using my paid host web/email server.
For some reason Outlook can not make the pop3 connection to download emails from the remote host. I have tried various configurations of email settings in SME Server that may be blocking remote pop3 access but no go.
Any suggestions?

Take a look at the logs in /var/log/qmail & /var/log/qpsmtpd and see what message's if any they are showing as to why it's not connecting

Neither qmail nor qpsmtpd has anything to do with pop3 connections from Outlook to an external POP3 server.
SME server doesn't block any outbound connections.

There are none.

Check that default route in the client is correct. If it's not trying to use the SME server as its gateway to the Internet it's not going to get to the Internet.
