I have a W98 SE client and when it hangs (1-2x/day), it requires a forced ie. hard reset or even cold boot. When it comes back up, a dialog box appears after it logs onto the server, which is the "Creating User Profile" box. This shows the creating of directories, copying of user files, etc progress. Then the client restores mapped drives and boots OK (usually).
The trouble is that after this forced re-boot, this dialog box sits there with very little activity, just the odd disk access for anywhere from 5-10 minutes, then it boots. Boy, is it annoying!
Does anybody have any suggestions if I can do something about this?

OOOhhh you lucky lucky bastard. 1-2x/day is great. How did you get it to do that?. (Sorry couldn't resist that) Have you tried disabling User Profiles and setting it to "All users use the same settings"? maybe try running win98 setup over the top of your existing setup to freshen things up a bit. Visit windows update. Run a full scandisk then defrag the HDD. (you've probably already been there and done that)

Now, now. No need to be like that!
Actually my W98 box runs surprisingly well, but I have played around with the configuration of the drives and followed my Mac training when installing software, and it has seemd to make it quite reliable really, given I hammer it.
Anyway, I have just set the User Profiles and I have to load it up now and see what happens.
Yes, I have done the scan/defrag combo many times, but unlike Macs, this does not really seem to help.
I have toyed with running W98 setup again, but this seems to mess with links, etc...
I will let you know how I go. I appreciate your help in such a trivial 'problem'.

There were 2 extra User Profiles to the one that should have been there...??? Anyway, I killed them and the box shuts down and starts up well now.
Thanks for the help.
