Hi there!
Just a quickie - I was toying with the idea of creating a backup server from spare parts i have lying around and these is what I find:
3 x Seagate Barrcuta 40GIG ATA (identical drives)
512mb Ram
Intel Celeron 1.1
Gigabyte m\board (works fine with sme)
So i was hoping to use the Hard Drives in a RAID 5 array as this is my backup server, but is there enought CPU power for it? The machine is not going to do anything else but this task.
Thanks in advance. Riff.

Riff,
As this post is a couple of days old now, I guess you've already tried it & know the answer yourself.
If not, I would say that the CPU is capable of running your server, assuming your not too worried about what else it runs (& how quick). If its just backup - normally run during downtime & so speed is not critical, I'd have thought it would be OK.
As its really pretty quick to build the server & install SME, just get on & try it. If it doesn't prove quick enough, it's not cost you much time. If it works, great - then report back on this post & share .... :D

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply jonroberts.
I did get around to building the machine and it runs fine! All set up and tested. As usual, I am impressed with this distro!
