Title: e-mail webmail/client
Post by: KDB9000 on September 24, 2006, 12:21:00 AM
I put my info in for outlook and had it connect and get my e-mail from the SME server, but when I got into the webmail part the e-mail is gone. Is there anyways I can have the program sync but leave the e-mails on the server so they can be accessed by the webmail and the e-mail program? I am not sure if it is a seeting in the client program or something on the server.

Right now it is being tested using VMware and it is in server-only mode.

There's an option in the email account (i.e Outlook/Outlook express) options to "leave the message on the server" as well as download to client.

Sounds like you are using POP in your email client which downloads all the messages off the server to your local PC/workstation.
See OE/Tools/Accounts/Properties/Advanced/leave a copy on the server, but this really applies to POP accounts rather than IMAP accounts.

You probably want to use IMAP which leaves all the mail on the server and is accessible by webmail and/or an IMAP email client.
That way, whatever you do in either program will be accesible/viewable from the other program wherever you are.

Hi KDB9000,

When using pop in outlook do this:
Go to>tools>email accounts>view or change existing account
click on "next"
highlight the account you want to change
click on "change"
click on "more settings"
choose the "advanced" tab
click on "leave a copy of messages on the server"
click on "OK"
click on "next"
click on "finish"

Outlook will now download a copy of the message and leave a copy on the server :)  I hope this helps.

Regards,
Del

You need to bear in mind that leaving a copy of mail on the server will leave all incoming e-mail on the server (although there is an option under the settings - advanced to automatically delete after x days).  It also means the webmail will not give access to any mail sent by Outlook & vice versa.

This may not be a problem.  I have some clients set up this way and they just want an easy option to check new mail & this is fine.  However, some people don't like the fact that when they use the webmail the see a whole bunch of e-mails in their inbox that they have already deleted from Outlook.

If you really want webmail to show what's in Outlook, then you'll need to set Outlook up to use IMAP rather than POP for email.
