Hey Darrell
Looking forward to this contrib, will install on a test server.
Phil
So there is life out there  I look forward to your test reports Phil.
Here are a few tips. Once you configure a backup job there are three ways to launch it. Automated via scheduled cron job, manual via the Backup panel or direct from the command line.
The output of automated jobs is e-mailed to admin. So the typical overnight backup will be e-mailed.
Manual jobs executed from the panel send output to /var/log/messages. Use the 'View log file' panel to monitor the job progress.
Command line you simply issue:
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dar2-backup job
Replace job with your configured jobname. Output is direct to console.
For restores, best to use the panel only. It is possible to execute from the command line but you need to fully understand and populate restore.job db entries.

Hello.
SME 7.0, up to date.
I have been using the previous backup2USB for months, without issue.
I installed your new contrib, and the following error message is appearing. It is the same hardware, (USB connected 250GB Maxtor with the correct fstab for the earlier contrib, at least) as the older contrib was using. I have not de-installed your previous contrib. I kicked off a manual test job using the web GUI...

Why are you using a custom mount point /media/MobyDisk for a standard usb disk? SME 7.x automatically supports an attached usb disk via /media/usbdisk.
I also expect you are not using beta 1. Grab the latest rpm. It supports custom mount points.
Darrell
-
The beta 1 recognized my custom mount point. Works fine. I need to test some restores, etc.
I did not receive email when the task completed. Is this feature in place yet?

This little summary, included in the logfiles of the manually created job, is very cool and potentially very useful.
Awesome.

beta 3 released
# rpm -qp --changelog smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-b3dmay.noarch.rpm
* Fri Oct 06 2006 Darrell May <dmay@myezserver.com>
- added dar2-dr-restore, a disaster recovery restore script.
- [0.0.1-b3dmay]
How to test a disaster recovery
Set up a test server. Add some users, ibays, files, emails. Install the following rpms:
dar-2.3.1-1.i386.rpm
perl-CGI-FormMagick-0.92-08.noarch.rpm
smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-b3dmay.noarch.rpm
Configure a dar job and perform a backup.
Blow your server away by performing a fresh reinstall reformating the drive. Perform a basic console config entering the exact same server parameters as used perviously. Install the following rpms:
dar-2.3.1-1.i386.rpm
perl-CGI-FormMagick-0.92-08.noarch.rpm
smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-b3dmay.noarch.rpm
Launch the disastery recovery restore script and answer all questions as prompted:
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dar2-dr-restore
I have tested a usb restore and found it successfull. Please test and report your results.

Is the partial/differential/incremental functionality of DAR in operation yet?
-
Hi Darrell,
Is there any difference on a 911 restore between running your script as noted above (/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dar2-dr-restore) and setting up an equivalent backup job using the panel and initiating a restore and subsequent reconfigure from there?
This is the process I followed and the restore has appeared to work successfully. I backed up my test server to a production machine ibay and performed the restore from the same location. Users, groups, ibay contents, mail all appeared to be there after the restore.
Also, could you consider adding a reminder in the panel that the standard list of items backed up for a Disaster Recovery job does not include other contribs/systems added after the SME Server install. I had fogotten that and one of my applications failed after the restore -- because the list did not include the directories where postgresql was installed. (My problem - not the fault of the backup system.)
Great contrib, Darrell.
John
-
Is the partial/differential/incremental functionality of DAR in operation yet?
No. The only value incremental backup provides is to reduce backup time. In practice incremental backups (in general not simply dar) are prone to failure when it comes time to restore. IMO incremental backups are not a reliable choice to make. Therefore I will not recommend, add and support this feature myself. However, an experienced admin can of course custom build their own incremental backup jobs should they wish to accept the incremental failure risk.
Currently, to meet the goal of reduced backup time dar2 permits multistreaming multiple backup jobs to different targets, on different days, as well as excluding/pruning backup selections. Overall an effective backup strategy begins with an effective data directory structure. Thoughtful management here, in combination with the dar2 features above, is hoped to meet most needs.

beta 5 released:
# rpm -qp --changelog smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-b5dmay.noarch.rpm
* Mon Oct 09 2006 Darrell May <dmay@myezserver.com>
- bugfix:1966 edited Exclude/Prune labels & switched display order
- added archive listing to dar2-backup output
- [0.0.1-b5dmay]
Darrell
-
Hi Darrell,
Is there any difference on a 911 restore between running your script as noted above (/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dar2-dr-restore) and setting up an equivalent backup job using the panel and initiating a restore and subsequent reconfigure from there?
Their are a few key differences:
- you do not have to set up the job via the panel
- you get to see via the console exactly what is happening during the restore
- post-upgrade;reboot is automatic
Thanks for the report. Glad to hear the restore worked as expected.
[TIP] As for contribs. I recommend everyone store all contribs in use under /root/contribs. Whether a tarball, script or rpm. In this way the standard backup will grab them and restore them. After a disaster recovery restore (possibly a server upgrade) it is up to you to verify the contrib is suitable for the SME version installed and reinstall if desired. The best part is you at least know precisely what you had in the past by simply looking in /root/contribs.
Darrell
-
<No...>
Thank you for the clear response. Agree entirely. Particularly your
viewpoint on the use of incrementals. Caveat: Dantz's Retrospect -
a full backup with intelligent differentials which has proved itself
here over the years on the M$ boxes (their Linux port is too costly).
<...an effective backup strategy begins with an effective data directory structure.>
Agreed, I've had nearly a screenful of hierarchically tailored backups
jobs in each of the contribs' various iterations. Mental gymnastics and
forward planning required to squeeze into available target resources.
<Thoughtful management...>
'Thought': I now need a LOT more network added storage, as had been
counting on differentials being stirred into the final mix. Will have to
manually segregate large tracts of non-changing stuff away from daily
changeables to make daily backup jobs use up less target resource. I
had orginally hoped that this thread would develop into or near what
Dantz Retrospect does so utterly brilliantly on my M$ boxes.
BTW your Backup2 contrib very recently pulled my site through the
SME6 to SME7 local hiatus impeccably and my expectation is that
your alliance with Jean's DAR will prove to be even better;~)
-
BTW your Backup2 contrib very recently pulled my site through the SME6 to SME7 local hiatus impeccably and my expectation is that ...
Thanks. The main reason I switched to dar was to get a completely GPL contrib to better facilitate inclusion into the core distro. Another reason I did not include incremental support is I doubt this is something the core team would ever want to support. Too much risk!
Since you have experience w. backup2 how about testing and reporting your dar2 results. The more feedback the better. The last few beta releases have all come from bug reports and feedback suggestions. Most appreciated
Darrell
-
Another reason I did not include incremental support
Full backups with recent differentials work locally at my site.
If that development option arises then sign me up as a tester.
...how about testing and reporting your dar2 results.
OK. Now awaiting delivery of further storage capacity to cope with the
declared development roadmap (ie no differentials likely). Intend to
increase M$ workstation's resources with a 500GB disk share.
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//dmay \ /smeserver/7.x/testing/smeserver-dar2/smeserver-usb-disk-howto.htm
To experiment with your new USB mount HOWTO have also ordered
a 500GB USB2/FW400 box (quicker than a gigabit network share?).

The main reason I switched to dar was to get a completely GPL contrib to better facilitate inclusion into the core distro.
Does this mean my purchased license for WinRAR is now redundant?
-
Does the adoption of DAR technology mean I can now 'safely' stack up
multiple back up jobs concurrently which will stress my intranet's (gigabit)
'bandwidth' and similarly stress the server's CPU utilisation/loading factor?
Previously your concern was with (samba?/nfs?/smb?/network?) time-outs.
-
Hello Darrell,
First, THANKS for all of your works (contribs) that put SME on another stage !!!
I just have a small question...
Why your contribs use now a .dar extension over a "international" (must extended in world) .RAR extension or other ?
It is possible to get the choice between .dar and .rar or other (.gz, .zip, etc...) ?
It's just a question... Is it's because .dar is more stable, compressive, faster, etc... ?
And do you know if a Windows software was available to extract a .dar file ?
Thanks for all answer...
Snoopyski
-
Does the adoption of DAR technology mean I can now 'safely' stack up multiple back up jobs concurrently.
This is not new. This was always a coded feature of backup2 and has no relationship to the engine underneath (ie rar/dar).
Previously your concern was with (samba?/nfs?/smb?/network?) time-outs.
Wrong contrib. That was in reference to JPL's rebuild of e-smith-backup. The only relationship my contrib has is it uses dar as well. Otherwise mine is simply an update of backup2. They are two completely different contribs with two completely separate Bug Tracker categories.

OK Darell,

Darrell, do you want my experiences with the new USB local box
here in this thread, the bugzilla or should I start another thread?
Any 'tried this and it worked great' should go to this thread.
Any 'tried this and it didn't work' is a potential bug and therefore should go to the Bug Tracker as a new ticket entry under the smeserver-dar2 category.
Darrell
-
Got it;~)
I've never used a USB2 drive before now (only FireWire400 boxes).
So I followed your install USB box HOWTO at...
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs \ //dmay/smeserver/7.x/testing/smeserver-dar2/smeserver-usb-disk-howto.htm
...to install the new USB2 kit (SME7).
BTW your thread starter's listing for the above isn't active (ie no URL).
What a good clear instructive HOWTO, my thanks, you forgot
to say "breathe now" so I was a little cyanotic near the end.
I fell down the gotcha leaving the USB box mounted afterwards and so
couldn't start the subsequent backup run (as it was already mounted).
Q&A that you might consider adding to that HOWTO:
* How do you get the second, third etc drive added?
* Is there a helpful listing command to see the drive's parameters?
* How do ensure/confirm everything is running with USB2 (not USB1)?
* Is it OK to just rip the USB box off its power and data cords
ie in the case of user panic in the face of a fire/flood/disaster?
So, yes, the USB2 box does the job. My expectations were considerably
higher than what it (the USB2 box as a local drive for smeserver-dar2)
seems to have delivered. Perhaps 'things' need more configuring...
to put it simply: it's 'expensive' in use and it's not that quick either.
This comes into the category of tried this and it didn't work so will
now go away and prepare some bugzilla threads (URLs added later).
postedit
The tried this and it didn't work stuff is now in bugzilla #1978...
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1978
-
So, yes, the USB2 box does the job.
Then you should be reporting everything worked. Which it did.
My expectations were considerably higher...
This is a hardware issue that this software contrib has no influence on. USB2 data transfer speed is not fast. If you require faster transfer speed try a removable IDE or SCSI drive (or drive-array). Any mountable drive can be used with this contrib. It is not limited to USB disks only.
Search for forum posts outlining how to add an additional drive.
Darrell
-
Wasn't a 'should' I actually 'did' report that it did the job;~)
To confirm, what it did worked OK on the USB2 box.
I briefly tested some restored files and they were OK too.
The actual server's case ie internals are full up already (2TB+).
BTW I tried the FireWire interface option on the SME7, nothing got
recognised but I can't be certain that everything FW'y is set up.
The USB2 box is history, as I type it's now being formatted as NTFS.
Yet another FireWire box for the M$ workstation.
Thank you for helping me out on this USB2 test.
-
BTW I tried the FireWire interface option on the SME7, nothing got
recognised but I can't be certain that everything FW'y is set up.
from Centos Mailing list..
Firewire is not turned on in the standard RHEL kernel. It is on in the
CentOSPlus kernel.
-
I've started a new thread to avoid diluting this one.
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34190.msg146787#msg146787

The ex-USB2 box is now a FireWire NTFS box on a M$ workstation share.
Currently on course to complete the previous test in about 2hrs having
used negligable server resources (only 1 CPU for a start!) showing a load
factor of approx 0.5 though obviously this run is using a network share
and smbfs (as opposed to a local drive and ext3).
-
Currently on course to complete the previous test in about 2hrs having ...
Sounds great!
Darrell
-
Agreed;~)
That ex-USB2 drive (now FireWire400/NTFS) driven over the gigabit
intranet on a M$ workstation's drive share (smbfs) completed in
1hr 50mins at a data throughput rate of ~32GB/hr and really quite
minimal server resources (1 CPU and a load factor less than 0.5).
Tomorrow will use this as a base mean and stress the system with
concurrent jobs to identify where I can increase or maximise data
throughput (without excessive resource 'expense' of course).

I stressed it a little and it broke;~/ (server not contrib)
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1980
Appears 'samba' has a vulnerability when it comes to multiple mounts.
Though I grant that my box does not (yet) have an associated patch kindly
derived by Greg and Charlie http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1969 .
AFAIC, for the sake of resiliency and reliability, smbfs mounts' concurrency
is now to be routinely avoided here. The irony being my attempts to extend
the boundary in the site's safety (copious backups) crashed my server, so
no more deliberate mount concurrency;~)

No terminal found for user interaction. All questions will be assumed a negative answer (less destructive choice), which most of the time will abort the program.
Normal output. This is simply stating that the job is being run automatically by cron, not a user able to answer and respond to errors if encountered. If any errors are encountered the dar program displays the error and awaits user response. With no one to respond dar automatically assumes a negative answer and as stated will most likely abort. Then our job is to review the error encountered and correct it.
As an example, if you run a dar job from the command line, this message does not occur as you are there to answer any queries.

Hey Darrell
Great stuff, so I can assume everything has gone ok?
I have been looking for a network share contrib like this for ages, many thanks for your efforts.
Am I correct in saying this contrib backs up Ibays, MySQL Databases and Email?
What parts of SME does the contrib not backup?
Many Thanks
Phil
-
Great stuff, so I can assume everything has gone ok?
Looks good to me.
I have been looking for a network share contrib like this for ages, many thanks for your efforts.
This has been available for over two years. Started as backup2ws, then renamed backup2, now dar2.
Am I correct in saying this contrib backs up Ibays, MySQL Databases and Email?
Yes
What parts of SME does the contrib not backup?
Everything that _is_ backed up is visible in the View/Modify panel. The only exception is every backup runs the pre-backup event which adds the mysql dump automatically. Basically is capable of performing a default smeserver disaster recovery backup/restore. Note this does not include any contrib rpms which must be reloaded after restore.
[TIP] If you keep your contribs in /root/contribs this becomes easy to identify and restore all your contribs.
Darrell
-
Hi Darell,
Thanks for this great contrib, worked like a charm here,
6.5 Gb saved in 8 min
I have had some troubles at the beginning, for example I was first mounting my USB drive -> no error message but not working.
I found this in /var/log/messages
"according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is already mounted on /media/usbdisk"
One minor cosmetic thing, when the save button is used, the view is not refreshed in the Disk ARchive panel, ie the new backup job doesn't appear
Thanks again

ie 3700 files
mysql @ 25 Mb
Total backup size 1.55 Gb
Duration 0.3 Hours
at .4 Gb per hour
etc
But worked forst time for me using usb how to thanks
ps how do i know how much space is available on my backup drive? could that be added to the email too, as id like to backup everything and keep as many copies over time as possible
-
Email sent after a scheduled run but not after a directly invoked run.
Look at /var/log/dar2/mydomain/mybackup
and /var/log/messages too.
-
Piran, thanks i do get the email and everything worked as described with no issues at all, just wanted to add a bit of feedback of things i (maybe no-one else lol) finds useful
-
Noted, OTOH it could add stuff that might go wrong or get misreported.
This one gets the core back up and going. The rest is... well, different.
Darrell appears to be working on a further contrib that might suit:

Good idea, I think a lot of people have been caught by mysql dumps not being included in the previous contribs' "non 911" backup jobs, me included !
Thanks Darrell for your good work & ongoing improvements to this contrib.

[ANNOUNCE] smeserver-dar2 released
Beta is completed. Thanks for all your feedback. I have just uploaded my official release. Smeserver-dar2 provides for server backup & restore from a network share (workstation/server) or an attached USB disk. This contrib is an extensive rewrite/updating of smeserver-backup2 and uses Disk ARchive (http://dar.linux.free.fr) as the backup engine. This contrib is meant to supercede backup2 however I do not force this. Switch at your convenience.
As soon as mirrors sync you will find the following in my contrib dir:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/
Contrib rpm and required rpms:
smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-0dmay.noarch.rpm
dar-2.3.1-1.i386.rpm
perl-CGI-FormMagick-0.92-08.noarch.rpm
After install see the server-manager panel:

Hallo!
I've tried this contribs and it seem very interesting!!
I have tried a full backup, as default, but I have a problem when I extrac with dar -x option the files in a windows system:
the files are extracted ok, but the *.exe seem to be impossible to open with an error that say that I haven't the correct permissions... All others files work good and I can open, but the *.exe I can't.
Any help?
Thank you very much!
Bye,
Daniele.

also just thought can you throttle the cpu use when its backing up, i have a website on my server that runs so slowly when backing up
normally a page is generated in 0.122 seconds during backup its 4 or 5 seconds
-
also just thought can you throttle the cpu use when its backing up, i have a website on my server that runs so slowly when backing up

Isn;t there some way to lower the priority of the backup process in favour of the webserver?
-
I just installed this contrib. Looks very promising!
I want to run a full backup of my system to a usb attached hard drive. /home/e-smith/files/ can be excluded, because I already have regular snapshots scheduled with rsnapshot (http://www.rsnapshot.org) (cool tool!!).
The default backup selection is:
etc/e-smith/templates-custom
etc/e-smith/templates-user-custom
etc/group
etc/gshadow
etc/passwd
etc/samba/secrets.tdb
etc/samba/smbpasswd
etc/shadow
etc/smbpasswd
etc/ssh
etc/sudoers
home/e-smith
root
If you want to perform a full backup, it seems to me that this list is not covering the full system. Am I correct that if you want to make a full backup, you simply add every directory found in '/' to the backup selection (/proc and /tmp excluded of course)? (And in my case I can exclude /home/e-smith/files .)
Anyone experience with a full backup?

Haven't tried it yet, but you might consider a 'renice 15 <PID>' ?

renice 15 <PID>
What is that all about please? Looks interesting to say the least;~)
When I use DAR2 over the intranet the target drive's capabilities keep
the backup run in check, when I do the same with a drive local to the
server (USB or eSATA) all hell breaks loose;~/ Both processors go
straight into redline utilisations, everything else 'backs up' ie slows
down while the system attempts to write the backup locally.
-
Darrell,
I've installed your contrib and I see the server-manager panel.
I created a backup job (//MyPC/SME_backup/Ibay/) and when I perform a backup in a few seconds I get the message "Operation status report SUCCESS"
However, nothing is backupped or maybe backupped but not transfered to my WinXP PC.
Dit I do something wrong?

If you 'renice' a process to a value above 0 (the 'nice value' can be between -20 and 20), the process gets less attention of the process scheduler which is part of the Linux kernel. This way processes with the default priority (0) won't be slowed down too much.
The rsnapshot job on my system that runs at least 6 times a day is also rather resource demanding. By giving it a nice value of 15, my system stays more responsive. I start the job by 'nice -n 15 <COMMAND>'.

...By giving it a nice value of 15, my system stays more responsive. I start the job by 'nice -n 15 <COMMAND>'.
If you feel this is a valuable addition please open a NFR bug ticket. Perform some tests using various adjustment levels and add your test results to the ticket. Test both network share and local disk backups. As a minimum report base overall completion times and cpu utilization curves during defined jobs, then add various adjustment levels and report changes.

Hi dmay;
I'm a little confused about the whole incremental backup functionality, or lack thereof, of this contrib (thanks for your effort, by the way); this thread seems to suggest that your contrib does NOT have incremental backup functionality, and this one http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34187.0 (not started by you) seems to suggest that it does. I've installed the contrib and I can't seem to find anything that suggests incremental. What's the official word?
Secondly, and a little off topic, is that in my opinion incremental backup on smaller networks is valuable. Resource limitations are a big motivator. The system I use now, some cron/tar scripts, gives me a full system backup every Sunday with incremental backups during the week. It is a nice balance between resource consumption (disk space) and backup completeness. I guess a combination of your contrib and my scripts is the way for me to go. But I notice you're now working on an rsync type of contrib; I wonder if a combination of dar/rsync contribs is a good middle ground?

Ok, that's clear. 'Unfortunatelly' my SME installation has got quite a number of additional rpm's installed. For a full backup I would at least need to backup /usr and /var as well (or certain parts of them).
So I am still wondering which selection list I should use for a non default SME installation.
Does anybody have experience with full backups of a customised SME installation?

The concept of a full system backup (& restore) requires careful consideration.
See
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=27097.msg111256#msg111256
The way I do it is to swap one RAID drive out every so often, and do daily backups.
In the event of a major failure I can install the removed RAID drive, rebuild the array and then sync the data to the last good backup.
It's a trade off of fiddly selective restoring, versus a clean install, restore & reinstall of contribs etc.

> I've installed the contrib and I can't seem to find anything that suggests incremental.
Darrell's contrib smeserver-dar2 and the other you mentioned e-smith-backup with dar are completely different contribs, and they do different things, Darrell mentioned this earlier in this thread (back a page or two).
-
So he did, RayMitchell, thanks for pointing that out. All of a sudden we have backup choices... ;-)

For people who needs dar backup with incremental backup and selective restore I point that e-smith-backup with dar has a new bugfix release : http://bugs.contribs.org/attachment.cgi?id=591

I did a little testing over the past few months on backup2 and then dar2. Thought some of you might be interested in the results.
The machine had a 2.0GHz processor with 2GB SDRAM and a pair of 160GB IDE hard drives running under SME7. Quite a lot of the data (80-90%+) to be backed up contained images that already had some level of compression applied. So no conclusions should be drawn about the effectiveness of the compression routines.
In August 2006 we ran some backup tests using backup2 to try to get a sense of what worked best. Here are the results for backup of a server with 65.7GB data.
Tool--------Compression_Level--Transfer_Technology--Result_Size----Time----Compress _Size---Data_Rate
backup2-----------0-----------------10/100_ethernet-------65.7GB--------9_hrs-----------100%---------7.3GB/hr
backup2-----------3-----------------10/100_ethernet-------36.7GB--------19_hrs-----------56%---------3.5GB/hr
backup2-----------3--------------------USB_2------------------36.7GB-------21.5_hrs---------56%---------3.1GB/hr
The last two columns provide the most significant information.
Clearly, the compression is a bigger factor than data transfer speeds on overall backup time. This means that USB is only slightly slower than 10/100 Ethernet as a storage option for this situation.
We then tried the backup in October using dar2 on the same server with slightly less source data. Here are the results for backup of a server with 64.3GB data.
Tool--------Compression_Level--Transfer_Technology--Result_Size----Time----Compress_Size---Data_Rate
dar2---------------3--------------------USB_2------------------36.9GB-------11_hrs-----------59%-----------5.8GB/hr
dar2---------------3------------------SATA-150----------------36.9GB-------8.5_hrs-----------59%-----------7.6GB/hr
dar2---------------0------------------SATA-150----------------64.3GB-------45_min----------100%----------85.7GB/hr
The USB option for the two backup mechanisms shows 'dar' being much more efficient than 'rar' in terms of time (5.8GB/hr vs. 3.1GB/hr) for a similar compression effect (difference of 3% in compressed file size).
As one might expect, a backup to a locally attached SATA drive with no compression is by far the fastest approach. However, the data rate (85.7GB/hr in this environment) blew me away!
-
Great report!

What exact SATA hardware was used and how was the SATA drive connected? Internal, external, removable chassis, SATA controller?

Darrell,
Just loaded DAR2 the other day, thanks for the great work! :D I really appreciate the choice of cifs or smbfs.
Currently I'm still using backup2 because I find the RAR files more convenient to open, but as I'm able I'll transition over to the new contrib.
Slightly off topic, but does anyone know of a Windows GUI app that supports DAR format? I've done extensive searching and come up with squat. My reason for this is because the most common occurence for me with my backup is to recover a single file or folder a user deleted a day or days ago. A GUI app is more convenient and efficent in this situation. Its also easier to teach someone else how to use it. I know there is Kdar for the KDE desktop, but my primary work platform is a Windows PC.
Thanks, David
-

Not that I've found. However there is a Windows command prompt version of dar in my contrib area. Follows the same syntax as the Linux version so see 'man dar' for details.

Darrell,
I have specified "Expiry 2" in the server manager and have the backup running daily.
After today's run, should I expect to see 3 backup sets (today plus yesterday plus the day before yesterday) or should I expect to see just 2 (today and yesterday)?

It is based on your archive files last modified time. Here is the code in question:
/usr/bin/find $MOUNT/$ID/$DCF/*.dar -type f -mtime +$EXPIRY -exec /bin/rm -f {} \; > /dev/null 2>&1
'man mount' tells us:
-mtime n
File's data was last modified n*24 hours ago.
In most cases this will result in 'n' + 1 being left.

Set up dar2 and it worked fine but when I log onto the network later and do this......

.... as the dhcp has given pentagon a new IP
so I tried restarting the client.... restating the dhcpd on the server.... but it appears that once the dar has backuped to an IP it sticks with it... But I feel sure that's not right.
Should I fix the IP of the client (pentagon), it's a laptop so I'd rather not. Or is there a config for dar that I've missed. I would have thought //pentagon/dar, which is constant would be OK.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks...

Error connecting to 192.168.0.145 (No route to host)
Error reports should always go to the Bug Tracker. However, this is more likely a network WINS/DHCP config error. Make a bug report and we'll track it done in the Bug Tracker.

Darrell,
Is it possible to adjust the "Expiry logic" so, that the program "counts" backup sets instead of backup dates?.
I have a problem with more then 1 usbdisks, which I swap every day.
When I have 3 disks and I want to have 2 sets of backup on each, how can I setup that?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks...

Sounds like a math puzzler
If you use a drive once every 'n' days and want to store 2 backups an expiry of ((n*2)-1) should work.

Can this contrib be used to backup to a nfs server before i test it.

Just switched from Backup2 to Dar, thanks Darrell.
One quick Q, using the default backup routine, does that capture the mysql databases. For me to recover from a server failure all I really need is the ibays/mail dirs (already captured in the current backup set up) but I am curious if the mysql databases are included too?

>...i havent tried to recover, but i guess it work fine.
You should really prove that your restore procedure work correctly.
If something is wrong with either your backup files or your procedures (backup or restore), then you may not be able to restore your data.
You will be relying upon a successfull restore then, and it will be too late to resolve any problems without posible loss of data.
Test your backup and restore procedures fully to prove a full restore is possible with the methods you use, don't just "guess" it will work fine.

I would suggest you to try running your job from the console

job_name is the one you defined through the web interface.
That way, for the time being, you'll get some more helpfull messages.

ive also get this when trying to backup to USB disk
cannot create directory `/media/usbdisk/smeserver.xxxx-xxxx.dyndns.org/Backup2USB': Read-only file system
-
I have get it with samba the only thing now is readonly on the USB disk
Edit never mind it was the disk mounted as readonly :D
As you can see my linux skills are very limited

It sounds like you may have customized your system to incorrectly mount /media/usbdisk in readonly mode. Check /etc/fstab. The drive should not be mounted prior to running a backup.

I want to thank Darrell for the DAR contrib after I used it to restore 80GB of data to a recently upgraded 7.1 system.
In summary, my 7.1 system lost its drive and went down hard. I was only using a single disk, now it uses the RAID option (!).
Fortunately, I had been using the DAR contrib for a full 911 nightly, using a Maxtor 250GB via USB. I retain 3 days worth of backups using the GUI associated with the program.
I downloaded the new 7.1 ISO, built the new server, installed the three rpms associated with Darrell's DAR program and rebooted. I then used the command line to do a full restore from the USB drive after verifying it mounted automatically, etc.
It worked LIKE A CHARM. Nothing like the feeling of being able to pull this sort of thing off.
THANK YOU for taking the time to create this most powerful and effective backup mechanism, and for documenting it for people like myself.
regards,
patrick

How do you automount the USB disc?

using Darrell's command....
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dar2-dr-restore
the USB disk is mounted after a few questions are answered.

I need to backup to a NT-server; I use an ibay for the target.
Get following email
Connecting to /home/e-smith/files/ibays/backup/files

Do I have to mount the ibay like an attached drive?

I need to backup to a NT-server;
Your still running NT. Why?
I use an ibay for the target.
No. You back up SME to your NT Server, therefore the destination target where you will store your backup becomes:
//ntserver/share
You need to define a network share and local account on the NT Server. You assign this account full access write to //ntserver/share. Then enter the target destination, account name and password in your dar2 job panel.

I would like to back up to an Ibay and then use my normal tape backup software to pull the backup file. This allows me to store the backup file in my normal schedules with my other backups. I had been backing up directly to tape but found on restore that my backup software was not maintaining file ownerships and permissions.
Do I have to mount the ibay like an attached drive?
Or can I just use /home/e-smith/files/ibays/backup?

Thanks Darrell!
It works well, also the restore is ok.
PS:
I still use a NT-server because my tape-drive & ERP-system aren't supported by sme7 / linux.

You are backing up the server to the server it self. That is not a logical way and i don't think it can do that. You say you need to back up to a NT server, so you can back up to a network share on that. I use that and it works fine.

Thanks for the information on backup to a local share. I have set the backup to go to a share on the NT server. I then grab it with tape from there.
I do have a question on what the proper filesystem is for backup to NT/XP
SMBFS or CIFS?

NT/XP = SMBFS.

Install smeserver-dar2 on your sister's server. Create an ibay on your server. Have her backup to your ibay. On your server perform a standard backup (which will include all ibays and her dar archives).

Is there only one rpm to install for this contrib?
If your installing on SME 7.1 you need two:
The Disk ARchive program:
1) dar-2.3.2-1.i386.rpm
My contrib:
2) smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-1dmay.noarch.rpm

I am getting theis message back and I am not sure if I should be concerned. In fact I am not even sure what it means. A look at the Dar site has not enlightened me.

Anyone ?

Hi Darrell,
Please tell me where I should record a new feature request.
I have a client that cycles his dar2 backup usb disks offsite. In view of highly publicized media reports of backups going missing with valuable/personal information, I would like to find a way to encrypt the backups. I understand that dar has an encryption capability. Would it be possible to add encryption as an option to the dar2 jobs?
Thanks.

I'm sorry for asking what I guess I should know, but how do I install? Sometimes I see reference to a yum localinstall command and sometime an rpm -ivh command. I've searched the contribs forum for standards and I've read this whole thread. I see the rpm method was listed with the betas. Can someone chime in on the proper way to install?
Thanks,

Hello Darell,
First I want to say "THANKS" for your contribs... But for ALL OF YOUR JOB DONE for the SME Server community...
I gust have a small sugestion for the Backup2 contribs...
It is possible to add a option to do a backup from Monday to Friday... Because a lot of enterprise dosen't work on weekend so why doing backup and used hardware parts (hard drive...) !!! ...

Elliott,
This is what I do:
Download the needed files into a directory on your server (I use ‘dar2’ in the ‘software’ ibay):
# cd /home/e-smith/files/ibays/software/files/dar2
# wget http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//dmay/smeserver/7.x/dar-2.3.2-1.i386.rpm
# wget http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//dmay/smeserver/7.x/smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-1dmay.noarch.rpm
Go to that directory:
# cd /home/e-smith/files/ibays/software/files/dar2
Install the packages
# yum localinstall dar-2.3.2-1.i386.rpm smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-1dmay.noarch.rpm
and perform the signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot.
John

wjhoobs you can remove both rpm's if you want
-
Install the packages
# yum localinstall dar-2.3.2-1.i386.rpm smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-1dmay.noarch.rpm
and perform the signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot.
Thanks!

>..and perform the signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot
When using yum to install rpms, it should not always be necessary to do a post upgrade & reboot, the rpms you are installing should expand templates and restart any required services.
By using yum, it will automatically look for and install any dependencies (other rpms) required by the rpms you are installing.
You can still use
rpm -Uvh rpmname
(in prefernce to rpm -ivh rpmname)
as long as you have all the rpms & dependencies required, preferably saved in a empty folder, and you cd to that folder and do
rpm -Uvh *.rpm
yum is particularly good when installing directly from external repositories, using the --enablerepo switch, search the forums for various examples of this, as it will take care of dependencies and download and install those as well.
eg
yum --enablerepo=reponame1 install package

When using yum to install rpms, it should not always be necessary to do a post upgrade & reboot
Hi Ray.
Is there an easy way to determine when a post-upgrade and reboot is required, and when it is not?
Thanks, David.

> Is there an easy way to determine when a post-upgrade and reboot is required, and when it is not?
As I understand it, if you are installing a specific package (rpm), then a post upgrade & reboot would usually not be necessary, the required actions are performed by the rpm.
If you are doing a major upgrade or update using yum which involves many packages being updated (especially including the kernel), then a post upgrade & reboot will definitely be required.

That's some pretty key information to know that I don't remember reading anywhere. I'd say that it's the type of Q&A that an F.A.Q. should contain.
Thanks for the knowledge!

Hello,
Although I have been running a SME server-only box since 2000, I am not a skilled linux admin - part of the appeal of SME is its relative simplicity to administer in small biz environment.
With a little effort, I have my old server recognizing a USB drive and have dar2 *working* as far as I can launch a defined backup job from the control panel, and it runs.
However, my job is defined to run every night, but it does not do so on its own. Any ideas what I am missing here? Do I need to add as a cron job, and if so - can someone point me in the right direction?
Thank you, and thanks to dmay for his work!

This might be stating the obvious but did you set the "backup Day" to something besides manual. If you want it to run every night at 11pm for example you should set the backup day to * and the backup time to 23:00

That is correct - I use * for every day.

View /etc/crontab which should list your scheduled dar2 job.
View /var/log/messages for errors around your 23:00 scheduled start time.
