Title: Hylafax on SME 5.X how to
Post by: Rick on February 09, 2002, 03:43:57 PM
I wrote a little HOW-TO on installing Hylafax on a SME 5.X server. It's a little different from installing the same thing on a 4.X server. It can be found here:

The first rpm in the list in your HOW-TO, Omni-0.5.0-4.i386.rpm, is non-existent, or at least rpmfind doesn't know of its existence.

Hi Rick,

I should have been more careful and told you the actual problem. I know that the rpms exist because I downloaded them all using Google to find them. My real point was that your HOW-TO is bust.

1. The link to rpmfind actually calls...

                http://www.sulman.org/sme/www.rpmfind.net

If I edit the www.sulman.org/sme/ bit off the front of that incorrect address, rpmfind comes up ok, but when I cut and paste the names of the rpms from your HOW-TO into the search box of the rpmfind page, none of them are found. Cut and paste the same names into Google and I can find every one of them.

Ed,

I corrected the wrong links. Thanks for the attention. As far as the RPMFIND search is concerned: I don't know why this search does not work. All the RPM's mentioned in the HOWTO are on their site.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the updated how-to. I have some questions though:

1. Why do you use the beta version of hylafax 4.1?
2. Why do you use --nodeps to install the packages ?
3. Why don't you use faxgetty (send and recieve faxes)
4. Why don't you add the links so Hylafax starts up at boot-time?

I think your effort is good, but i also think that from a evarage user point of view your how-to is somehow incomplete. Maybe you can discuss this wit the original auther of the how-to? so a complete 'now-worries' How-To can be achieved?

Anyway good job, and please improve it for the 'average user'.

guestHH

And do we really need that big Japanese font rpm?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback so far.

> 1. Why do you use the beta version of hylafax 4.1?

I corrected this. I did not realize there was a new version.

Corrected this.

I am going to look into that later this week.

See above ;-)

> And do we really need that big Japanese font rpm?

Not sure about that. I think it's a dependency for ghostscript.

And when that works, just to make things more difficult, can you configure faxgetty to invoke mgetty on data calls and mgetty to run pppd for ppp connections?  This will permit the same modem to accept inbound fax, login, and dial-up networking calls.

Hi Les,

That is an 'user-specific' option that will follow in the section 'Options' Rick's How-To   ;-)

(or is it a real question..?)

I see you use a source rpm (hylafax-4.1-1rh7.src.rpm)...don't think it will work?
