Title: Setting up my email server
Post by: k0r54 on October 17, 2006, 05:15:52 PM
Hi,

I have tried but I am a little lost with a few things and have looked long and hard on contribs and google.

1)
I host my website with a web hosting company and they also have my emails.

Previously prior to me setting up a server I set up a new mailbox on my webhosting control panel and then configured that users outlook to pick it up directly from there.

As far as I can tell I have to set up a catch all mailbox on my webhost and then get sme to collect from there? Is that correct. Will sme automaticly distribute it to the right user from the to: header in the email?

2) I have my primary domain to mycompany.co.uk which is the same as my webaddress. Will this cause any problems? I figured this way when i set up new users it will automaticly set up a .co.uk rather than .local or wateva email address.

3) There are a few users on the network several email accounts name@mycompany.co.uk, sales@mycompany.co.uk and so on. Thing is i suppose i could create a user called sales and forward it but they want it as a seperate account within there emails. Is that possible? I will be using IMAP.

4)Bit of a bizzare one, my boss has a premium hotmail account so have pop access to it. Is it possible to create that as a seperate account aswell?

5) Is the email server preconfigure. I just need to set up an imap account on the users profile and job done. It will follow them everywhere.

I'm quite lost with the whole email part of sme so any help would be great.

Thanks

Most of it can be setup per server-manager if you install the fetchmail contrib. With this you can collect pop mail from external servers and configure it to be dropped in the users inbox per user. You will have to create a user for every user you want to have, then per user configure a fetchmail rule.

ad. 3 If you create two accounts you can create a symbloic link from box 1 to a folder in box 2. This way you will get the e-mail of one user visible in a folder in another user. Maybe there are better ways though.

The SME server e-mail server is automatically configured per server-manager. If you want users to access there mail from everywhere you could consider enabling webmail as well.
