I have come across this message from time to time. Sometimes it resolves itself next day & so I assume backup may have been running when someone else logged in to the system & did something that may conflict (probably on the destination PC, or it ran out of disk space, or network error etc).
Occassionally I have found a problem with the file that its crashing on & so have moved it / excluded it or whatever. If its happening repeatedly, I'd take a look at the file:
/home/e-smith/files/ibays/pastel/files/Pastel05/T005YE/Acchistl.DAT
& see if there's anything odd about it. Maybe try moving it for one backup to see if it makes any difference. I know you don't want to exclude it from you backup, but it would just help confirm whether the problem was related to the specific file or not.
As an act of additional paranoia, I will reboot both server and destination PC, just in case.
