I've tried any number of mind numbingly complex passwords and have yet to get SME v.7 set up. The choice is given to force the program to accept what it thinks is an insecure password but it just loops back to the beginning without moving forward.
Mind you, I fail to see what is insecure about a randomly generated 20 digit password that has a mix of lower case letters, symbols and numbers.
I've read that one can reduce the password strength the program wants to see but that does not help any before one has installed it.
Also, is the shell login it as 'root' or 'administrator'? This is not crystal clear.
Thanks for allowing the rant.

ezingleman,
Welcom to SME, I think with a little digging, you will see how powerful this system is.
I am not sure where you are trying to enter the password, but would be willing to help given a little more detail.
If you are at a monitor and keyboard attached to the server, shell access is gained through logging in as root, and the root/admin password.
Logging in as admin with take you to a interface where among other things you can change some of the basic setup parameters.
I think you posts will be better in the server forums rather than the suggestion forum though..

Bob,
My goof that I entered this under 'suggestions'. It should go elsewhere. Perhaps a moderator can move it there?
The problem occurred on initial install when one is configuring the network settings and hostname and domain name. I was setting the administrator password for the first time. It would not accept the password that I entered...though very complicated...and though the next selection said I could over-ride it, in practice, it would not.
I figured out that while I set an administrator password, it wanted "admin" when logging in through the https://hostname_here/server-manager
Thanks, Ernie

sme7 default password strength settings requires minimum 7 characters including upper & lower case chars & numeric & special caracters eg %$# etc, and not be plain english type dictionary words

Moving this topic to the SME Server 7.x forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

I have just installed SME 7 on a machine to do some tests and I have ALWAYS used the same password for any test servers, four lower case letters and two numbers, it always asks me if I want to choose a more secure password but I just say no. So I don't see why you can't use a 20 character generated password at initial setup. This is what I think makes the password strength thing in server-manager a bit confusing, I can use a simple password on setup for the most powerful user ie. root yet when I go in and add a normal user I need a minimum of 7 characters including upper & lower case chars & numeric & special caracters :?
