I'm looking for a small, simple FTP server, designed to use less resources than older servers, be smaller and very secure. To say that I'm not a Linux expert! But I'm learning!
A Linux Server.
Install everything from a CD (Linux and the FTP Program)
To have an GUI or some type of interface, to execute only with an password system program.
The GUI is use for setting up FTP Spaces, virtual quotas When virtual quotas are enabled.
Using only an static IP address no domain. No html websites. excepting auto FTP from other Servers and Computers.
With Copy to CD, DVD, and USB HD for backups.
To download upgrades through the GUI and install.
Be able to use simple FTP programs, like FileZilla or CuteFTP or any other program For Clients.
To use only ports 21 for FTP, port 22 for Root FTP, and port 80 for The GUI
To view log files through the GUI
Is all this passable? If it is where can I get the program? At what cost?
Is there any thing else that you can recommend more
I tried Netmax and that is just a sham
Thank You For Your Time

Your other posts would indicate you already have SME7.
Add this contrib http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34041.0 and I think you have what you want.

I'm uaing SME 7.0 for web hosting Now but I'm ready to build an FTP server and I'm looking for information on how to build an FTP Server with SME or other program to get what I need.
First there are no instructions about how to setup an FTP Server with SME 7.0
Second GUI is use for setting up FTP Spaces, virtual quotas When virtual quotas are enabled. (Ibays)
Third using only an static IP address no domain. No html websites. excepting auto FTP from other Servers and Computers.
Forth with Copy to CD, DVD, and USB HD for backups. You Recommend dar shell.
Fifth be able to use simple FTP programs, like FileZilla or CuteFTP or any other program For Clients.
Sexth to use only ports 21 for FTP, port 22 for Root FTP, and port 80 for The GUI
Seventh to view log files through the GUI.
Eight is there any thing else that you can recommend more

http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/sme70/manual#h82-1
I don't know the FTP part of SMEServer all that well as I don't use it as such..

I think you sent me to the wrong place first of all. Second I have read this Many times eather the information is out dated or just not complete. Example the information email using Thunderbird to recive emails but not send and outlook nothing!
I have not been able to use simple FTP programs, like FileZilla or CuteFTP or any other program For My Clients. To upload or download their webpages or files to the server from the outside the network. I've been the onlyone loading them to the server. Using WINSCP, but I can't give my clients access to the server with this program!
So I'm Looking for information from more experenced people about this program or another.
Thank You

Ok for first answer. How to setup FTP...
You allready have it.
For the second answer. When you create an user account it gets access to ftp. If you want to give users access to another place (ibay, another folder) you have to make a chroot path to the new folder.
The best way to do this is with a contrib called remote user access.
http://sme.dungog.net/packages/smeserver/7.0/i386/RPMS.dungog/smeserver-remoteuseraccess-1.2-10.noarch.rpm
And use dar for backup as william_syd suggested.
So now you have a server with backup and ftp + a contrib that can be managed trough server manager pannel and that can route ftp access to another folder if needed.
And if you want to make a place that registered people can visit and then upload, download, delete data you can use knowledge tree (google to see what this is) or webshare contrib which can also be used trough the server manager pannel.
If you want to try this contrib you can get it here:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/smeserver-webshare-1.0.0-8dmay.noarch.rpm
And you'll need this:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/perl-Apache-Htpasswd-1.5.9-1.1.el3.rf.noarch.rpm

I uploaded the three programs to root and then from the command line I RPMed the programs. When I use the program SmartFTP I get connected but can't upload or download files, folders, or make a new dir. I get this:
[01:18:48] MKD mine
[01:18:48] 550 mine: Permission denied
[/b]
Is there smiething else I need to do? I tried reinstall the programs to the server to make sure the programs where installed and the server says that they are installed. Is possable to install to the wrong place.
login at root
[root@cidftp ~]
[root@cidftp ~] # cd /
[root@cidftp /] # rpm -ivh smeserver-webshare-1.0.0-8dmay.noarch.rpm
Then
[root@cidftp /] # rpm -ivh smeserver-remoteuseraccess-1.2-10.noarch.rpm
Then
[root@cidftp /] # rpm -ivh perl-Apache-Htpasswd-1.5.9-1.1.el3.rf.noarch.rpm

Who are you logging in as ?
Did you read the manual very carefully in the section about ibays and uploading files using sftp.
Did you search these forums on ftp and sftp as this has all been answered a number of times previously.

I'm login as a client. Not as admin. As admin I can do everything add files, upload, download. But as brill, I get connected but I cannot mk files or upload

Did you configure user access in the server manager panel that gets added by
smeserver-remoteuseraccess-1.2-10.noarch.rpm

Hi Ray
I don't clam to be the expert in linux But I do need to be held by the hand sometimes. All I want to do is be able for my clients to upload and download their information to the ftp server. I'm able to connect to the server but not upload or download I get this:
[17:00:42] MKD mine
[17:00:42] 550 mine: Permission denied
Do I need to set up an ibay?

Firstly seperate matters as there are multiple issues running here.
Webshare has nothing to do with ftp and the remoteaccess rpm, it's a totally seperate program, and should work OK if you configure users and passwords in the webshare server manager panel. Access via
https://yourdomain/webshare/websharename
It also has a very easy to use web GUI.
That may be sufficient for your needs ie create a web share for every user who wants to upload & downlaod, but you will have to manage these users seperately to (in the webshare panel) the sme user accounts.
So, will webshare do what you want without needing to use ftp ?
Webshare is secure, ftp is not.

I put https://66.26.84.173/webshare/brillftp
Is this Correct?
-
I got this:
The connection has timed out
The server at 66.26.84.173 is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

You tell me, does it open a webshare login ?
Try using a domain name.

No, keep the answers here for all to see.
Use a domain type URL to access webshare (like it says in the panel) rather than a IP and tell us what happens rather than telling us nothing.

> The server at 66.26.84.173 is taking too long to respond.
I think you need to sort out your server, domain & dns records before trying to access applications.
-
I found the problem it was the Wrong Ip address it should have been 66.126.84.173
It works now the browser FTP
Now how would I back up information automaticlly from a computer in the middle the night Via This FTP system? With SmartFTP I can Automaticlly by date, time, the fills or folders to where I want.
Where is this file because I did not find it in Ibays or users?

Webshare is not a ftp system, it is a http web based GUI file manager system usually accessed by individuals rather than by automated programs. You may be able to create programming code to do what you want ??
The data for webshare is stored in subfolders under
/opt
I did ask if webshare will suit your needs, if not and you want auto upload etc using SmartFTP etc, then you need to sort out correct usage of ftp/sftp.

Search on ftp and sftp and include RayMitchell as author in your search, as how to do this has been answered a few times in detail by me already.
There are probably posts by others who have answered this too.

Everything I'm asking about is great for me and nothing is lost because I'm working on this FTP Server Now.
I have a Web Hosting server
But this week and next I will be working on another server for a client.
He wants a Linux server that he can run windows programs from connecting both in the office and from his home.
I told him that I might be able to get the dos programs to work from the server in his office, but not from his home only the backups he will have to download and run from his home computer. But the windows programs can only backups from the Linux server. I know that some windows programs can be run on Linux workstations. His workstations are Windows XP Pro in his office and I built them also. The new server is an Eserver Xseries330.
So everything I learn here I can include in what I'm doing. I have found that this is the best server to learn on. It's just a matter on finding someone to show me how to do things. Everything I know, I have by others and by doing. I just love challenges. I may be physically 90% disabled but I can still learn.

Don't really understand what all this fuss is about...
Created an ibay to use....
Did what it said under 'FTP' in the SME 7 manual.....
Allowed the FTP port (21?) on the router....
Up and whizzing away with nearly 50GB of MP3s accessible anywhere in the world now!! :) With the right password, of course! :D
No Linux needed - and 15 minutes to get it up and running....
