Today I stumbled on to the follwoing post on the net, with an excellent attachement which makes it possible to view and extract part of dar (amongst other) files using Midnight Commander (http://mail.gnome.org/archives/mc-devel/2006-April/msg00001.html):
The download can be found here (http://mail.gnome.org/archives/mc-devel/2006-April/zipQgV5qDMzSs.zip), instructions on how to install are in the file. The configuration files and the extfs directory can be found in /usr/bin/share.
If some linux guru can explain me how to enter configuration settings in to an existing configuration file using RPM's (offcourse with backing up a copy of the origianl) I will gladly roll (at least the dar extension) into an rpm for easy installation.

Submitted a request (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1609) to implement it in to CentOS in their bug tracker.

Nice find 8)
As soon as mirrors sync you'll find in my 7.x contrib area the following:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/mc-dar.tar.gz
Simply download, extract and execute the included install.sh script to add dar support to Midnight Commander.
