Title: SME Server Stop Serving
Post by: Teviot on December 04, 2006, 06:41:52 AM
Hi

My SME Server stopped serving both user and ibay shares. It also stopped allow the internet to come though to my pc's on my LAN.  I have installed another smaller HD and put SME Server on it. I want to mount the original HD as a data disk to try to recover the data on it that is important. I can access the server from the console but want to put in place a method for data protection for if this happens again.

My question is,

Can I use part of the instruction found at http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/mblotwijk/HowToGuides/AddExtraHardDisk.htm to mount the disk to recover the data and then follow them completely to use it as the data disk?

Another question is (as I haven't backup this improtant data ) what is the best method to back this data up?  I am prepared to install a cd writer for this task is this is the best method.

You can follow the instructions in the link.
If you only want the data to be restored, go until step 5.

As for backup:
1- install a Tapedrive
2- connect an external harddisk to a PC's USB port and make backups to that
3- install another Linux box and use Rsync
4- burn to CD or DVD

It depends on your situation/location/resources.
Hope this helps.
