Hi. I'm changing my server over from SME 6.5 to 7.1, with a clean install. However, during the configuration, when I try to set the server up in server-only mode, it never prompts me to choose a driver for my ethernet adapter. The configuration screen skips right from the Select System Name window to the Local IP Address window. As a result my server is unable to access my network or the internet. I can't imagine what could be wrong since my server was working perfectly under SME 6.5.
The computer does recognize that I have an ethernet adapter, because when I select server and gateway mode, the computer tells me that I can't do it because I only have one ethernet adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Well telling us what NIC you use would be a great start.
-
I'm using a Dlink PCI 10/100 Network Adapter
-
I had some problems using dlink adapter on SME7. Could you please write the model (eg. DGE-528T, DGE-530).
-
It's the DGE-530

This card isn't compatible with SME. I checked a little and found out that it works on kernel 2.4 as for kernel 2.6 .....
Works with kernel2.6 sklin98 driver - some strange messages and only 22MB/s (netio)
I found this on http://www.linuxcompatible.org webpage.
You should consider buying a different NIC. They are really cheap.

*Some* DGE-530T cards work fine with SME7. I have been using them in 3 servers for almost a year without any problems. See this bug for details.

Okay, thanks a lot then. At least now I know what is causing the problem, so I probably will just buy another NIC. Are there any other brands that I should watch out for? I'll probably get either a Linksys LNE100TX or an Intel.

Well i had huge problems with realtec NIC's. I had kernel panics every day. Now i use DGE-528T and it works quite well. And they say that intels are good as well.

What chipset is on that ?
-
It is based on the R8169 drivers (Realtek RTL8169).

I just found the box for my networking card. the model number is actually DFE-530TXS. Does this make a difference? Anyways i think the new NIC i'm going to buy is the SMC 1244TX, which I can get at a local computer store for 10 bucks. Does anyone know if this one will work?
Thanks a lot. you guys are great

I just bought and installed a Linksys 100TX NIC and I'm having the exact same problem. I even reinstalled SME but to no avail. I'm going to try installing SME 7.0 to see if I have the same problem.

Don't rely on the name/model of the card.
Have a look at the actual chip on the card.
Maybe try a different pci slot ?

I keep repeatedly seeing references to Realtek NICS causing problems. I have used untold 8139 NICs and never had any significant issues.
Sure they are not as smart as Intels and some others with onboard processing but the most significant issues I have ever had has been with Windows where they dont auto-negotiate the speed with the switch too well. Nailing them up at 100Mb full duplex sorts that out.
Using them with SME V6 & V7 and also various versions of IPCop and FC5 they have never cause problems.
I dont understand where the blame on Realtek NIC's comes from.

From me....
I had kernel panics every day. And all sorts of problems (droping connection, errors, strange bonding issues,...). My problem was solved when i got rid of those NICs.
And if you want to tell me that my card was faulty.... it's now installed in my computer and it works just fine.

Maybe try a different pci slot ?
It worked! I swapped the card into a different PCI slot and it works like a charm. I just can't imagine why that PCI slot only had a problem with SME 7.1 and not with 6.5. well I'm happy that that's out of the way. Thanks everyone for your help.

the only time I have had issues with realtek nics is when they were 8139 revision D. These cards do not mix well if you already have any 8139 a/b/c versions installed in the same box.
just my $0.02.

I had two identical (same model, brand, chipset) realtec NIC's which gave me problems.
-
My install also didn't see an 8169-based controller, Is there any gigabit NIC that is recognized by SME- 7.x?
THanks
John

I have had very good luck with the D-Link DGE-530T but ONLY rev.A1. Be careful with this card as rev.B1 models don't work.
From the bug tracker:
DGE-530T Rev.A1 Works with Centos and SME7.
DGE-530T Rev.B1 Does NOT work with Centos and SME7.
Others have also reported luck with some Intel based gigabit cards but I haven't tried any yet.

DGE 528T Works with some minor modifications to kernel drivers. (Use the search button and type dlink)
