Title: Installing / Upgrading using serial console
Post by: ntblade on January 23, 2007, 11:12:27 PM
Has anyone ever managed to upgrade / clean install an SME Server without a monitor but just redirecting the install process to the server's serial port?

This would be very useful indeed.

Thanks for any help / suggestions

Moving this topic to the SME Server 7.x forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

Thanks for the speedy reply,
I saw the link you posted when I was searching earlier.  I guess I would have to modify the installation CD bootloader then burn and try booting from it.

Which bootloader does the CD use please?
Anyone else think this would be a handy thing to be able to do?

Title: serial console install/upgrade

this would be very useful.  Particularly with the new 7.1 install which has a bunch more screens.  doing it from memory is pretty difficult.

If we could get a serial console available for the configuration bit it would also be really helpful.  I also tried using sme telnet ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx which should work but it doesn't.  IN the rh docs, it says one should be able toinstall over telnet.  this wouldn't help with getting through the configuration screens but would get through the install stage anyway.
