Title: Dial-up Problems
Post by: Brian Barber on February 21, 2002, 04:52:33 AM
My e-smith/SME server has been functioning admirably as a dial-up server for our network from I don't know when until today.  When any of the machines attempt to connect with an external web site, the following shows up in /var/log/messages:

Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: abort on (ERROR)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: abort on (Invalid Login)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: abort on (Login incorrect)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: report (CONNECT)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: send (ATZ^M)
Feb 20 20:48:00 chico chat[2322]: expect (OK)
Feb 20 20:48:45 chico chat[2322]: alarm
Feb 20 20:48:45 chico chat[2322]: Failed
Feb 20 20:48:45 chico diald[892]: Connect script failed.
Feb 20 20:48:46 chico diald[892]: Delaying 10 seconds before clear to dial.

For the life of me, I can't find any more detail on what's going on.  Any suggestions?

Hi, Brian,

Looks like your modem does not answer...

After the 'ATZ' it is supposed to say 'OK' I'm ready..

If nothing comes back, something is broken.

That's what I was afraid of.   I suspected that my modem has gone into the great beyond.

Thanks for the help,

..but don't forget to try to revive it!

If it's internal: reseat the card, shake the computer, blow out the dust, in general, pamper it...

If external, check the cables, check the powersupply, try it on another box, different comport etc..

Then, if all that fails to revive it, it's probable gonners....

Thanks for encouraging me to treat it nicely.  I found out yesterday that someone in the house bumped the box around the same time the modem stopped working.  (What a coincidence.)  I reaseated the modem and rebooted the machine, and now everything is working fine again.

I hope that everyone's problems are this easy to solve.

Cheers,
