I dont have a modded xbox and tbh I dont really want to because warrenty issues which i need due to the constant problem of them overheating.
Anyway I hope someone has some helpfull info.
Edited: - If it helps there is a program for windows which works really well called TVersity it makes itself a server and streams the media, its not open source but its freeware.

It's not possible (yet). Even not with an Xbox360 with a modded DVD drive.
You can only stream from windows or mediacenter PC's, not from SMB share
With an old Xbod that is modded you can.
A good site for this is:

There is also video LAN which is opensource and is available for Windows, MAC and Linux. I am not sure if it would work on SME but I use it on Windows XP OK. If you go here: http://www.videolan.org/ and search the site for xbox there is info on how to play media on the xbox over the network :D
EDIT: the search should be done here: http://wiki.videolan.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions Sorry.
