I have a couple questions about E-Smith I was hoping someone could answer.
Here they are:
-What version of Linux is E-Smith built off of?
-Is there a way to make it so that I don't get asked for a username and password when I try to view my E-Smith server through Network Neighborhood (Windows XP in a workgroup)?
-What port do I need to open up on my firewall to allow email through to IMP? (I am running E-smith as a stand alone server)
-What is a Workgroup and Domain Controller? I know what a domain controller is, but I've never heard of a Workgroup Controller.
Thanks!

Kevin,

Red Hat 7.1 This is in the documentation - you might want to take some time to read the material you will find on this web site.

Not sure exactly what you are asking here - but I'd say this question goes to your last one below. The answer will depend on how you set up your SME server, and how you set up the i-bay "share" security.

Mail is transferred using SMTP on port 25. It has nothing to do with what mail client you are using, such as IMP (which is just a web browser based mail client - BUT a nice one!).

The Workgroup setting just means that your SME server will act as a peer-to-peer type server, NOT act as a Windows NT based PDC(primary domain controller). How you set up SME depends on your unique needs and network situation, ex. do you already have a Windows NT PDC running on your network?
Hope this helped. Let us know if you have some follow up questions. Good luck.

Ok, here is what I meant. I have my E-Smith server setup in a workgroup. I created a shared folder where everyone has read and write permission. When I try to browse the computer in Network Neighborhood, I am prompted for a username and password. What do I need to configure so that I am not asked for this?
I don't want to create a domain.
Also, should I choose 'yes' to have E-Smith be a Workgroup contoller?

I have created an i-bay which is set to the following configuration:
* Information bay name: disc
* Brief description: Shared drive
* Group: Administrator
* User access via file sharing or user ftp: Write = Group, Read = Everyone (*)
* Public access via web or anonymous ftp: Local network (no password required)
* Execution of dynamic content (CGI, PHP, SSI): disabled
I have mapped this folder (e:) so I can easily access it. This way I can read all the files (play music from it) without entering a password or something on all of my machines.
Hope this is what you mean, let me know if there are questions!
Good luck!

Create the e-smith accounts with the same name and password that you use to log into your windows pc. I think the default behavior for unknown users changed with the 5.1.2 release so if you are using that, don't be surprised that other people aren't getting the password prompt.
