Hi there..
i am looking at setting up a large pop3 server for our datacentre.. it is going to host 40 000 - 50 000 mailboxes..
i have long been a fan of SME and was wondering if SME 7 would be up to the task? Would install it on new HP kit.. if it will handle this, can anyone make some server spec suggestions?
thanks.

SME : Small & Medium Enterprise :hammer:
With SME 6.0, some people complained about limitation at ~2800 users. This limitation does not exist anymore.
Do you want to use also anti-spam and anti-virus?

fair enough.. point taken..
nope, wont use av and spam.. got dedicated devices for that.. my next option would have been centos.. and figured since sme is based on centos it was a logical option because of its ease of setup

g00s3m4n,
Try to get a hold of Gordon. He may be able to assist you in an 'enterprise' way. Although SME Server si being used by a huge amount of 'home users', there are many business out there depending on SME server for a living.
Sounds you're in for 'SME Consultancy' provided by a select few only. Talk to Gordon.

IMO, SME is not the right choice for you.
I would recommend you Google for dedicated 'mail server appliance' and pick an existing product optimized for datacenter usage. Most large scale products recommend 20,000 mailboxes per server in a multi-server cluster environment.

I would have a look at zimbra or scalix.
