Is mysql accessable externally by other machines on the LAN ?

By default, not directly.
To do this you'll to investigate an appropriate delivery/connection agent such as ODBC, SOAP etc.

Trying ODBC.

Its say the connection was refused. I wonder if e-smith refused by default as its secure.
