Title: Booting with new harddrive, won't add to raid
Post by: spook on March 16, 2007, 12:53:42 PM
I have SME server 7.1 installed on 2 x 200gb harddrives. Unfortunately, one of the drives failed, but when I tried replacing it, SME would not boot. The machine does boot to the correct drive (not the new blank one), but all I get is a blinking cursor. If I unplug the new drive, it boots up just fine. I tried switching the disks around, but no luck. If only the old drive was installed, it booted just fine, no matter if it was plugged in as primary or secondary, master or slave. As soon as I plugged in the new drive, or any other harddrive for that matter - no boot.

Any ideas? I'm all out...

Update: Got it booting with the new drive allright, and it now sees it as hdc - But If I try adding it in the menu, it fails. If I try the command manually, it says this:

Code: [Select]
[root@server ~]# /sbin/e-smith/add_drive_to_raid -f
hdc/dev/hdc is not large enough at /sbin/e-smith/add_drive_to_raid line 54.

The drives (HDA & HDC) are both 200gb, but from different manufacturers (Maxtor & WD, respectively), so there is a smalle deviation in size, like 1000bytes or so. How do I resize HDA so it will fit on HDC?

Have you wiped out the drive you added(use dd) ?  And after doing this rebooted the server to ensure that the partition table on the replacement drive is refreshed?

It's brand new. Took it out of the wrapping, installed it.
