Title: Resolved - Slow copying onto SME server, OK copying off SME
Post by: dmajwool on April 02, 2007, 05:12:55 PM
I have a 7.1 server which has been running stable for quite a while.  We use it as a video server of large .avi files - maybe 15GB each file.

Recently, although the playback performance seems file, the record performance has deteriorated very badly.  With a Win XP client, we can copy a file off the server at about 1GB per minute, but copying a file onto the server takes 5 times as long.  Both operations used to take about the same time. AFAIK no changes, including updates have been done to cause the deterioration.

Using putty, ifconfig shows hundreds of thousands of RX errors on the eth0
interface, and almost exactly the same number in the frame column.

Does any one else have a similar problem?  What further information
can I provide?

Thanks for your advice.
David.

Bugzilla Bug 2822 resolved Invalid.

Have you tried another NIC ? just to make sure it's not a NIC problem ?!

It does sound like an i/f issue.

I would replace the cable that attaches eth0 to the L2 switch first; then try a different port on the switch or alternate switch; then check the NIC. The first two steps will take all of 5 minutes to try and eliminate.

Not a very satisfactory resolution, I'm afraid, but the problem has gone away after re-seating the pci network card.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

David.
