Title: Community spirit
Post by: dmay on April 11, 2007, 10:18:47 PM
Everyone,

Let us all make a concerted effort to improve our community spirit. Please refrain from replying with nothing more then telling people to search and/or RTFM. This is simply not a worthy reply. Every time you impolitely reply, even if help is provided, you tarnish the spirit of our community.

Let us raise our community spirit to guide and mentor each other. Please provide the answer that you know is available via search or is stated in the manual. Provide the user with your search result links and/or a link to the specific manual section or FAQ. Pull the answer out of this information and list the exact code needed to achieve their desired results.

Every time you politely help someone you mentor them to be better and in turn enhance the spirit of our community. You will also have my admiration and I'm sure others will concur.

Darrell

And don't forget to please report bugs and potential bugs in the bug tracker, don't be scared or worried about using Bugzilla it may be hard to use at first but it will get easy and prove worthwhile !

I have been tempted to say something in the past about the curt replies
however felt it was best to let some longer term members speak out

It takes a community to foster and support the spirit of the community. Active support will win over passive watching every time. The more voices mentoring, the quicker the goal will be achieved. Glad you voiced your support. The action item to take away is to:

Jump in and politely mentor whenever tempted.

This pretty much boils down to the rules and conditions of being a member of the java ranch, http://www.javaranch.com/ , pointed out by Gordon a while back. it consists of two words "be nice".
